Statesmen take down Lions 75-70

CLEVELAND – Joe McCray scored 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Delta State Statesmen to a 75-70 win over North Alabama.

The Statesmen scored eight of the game's final 11 points in the last three minutes to pull away from the Lions.

Four players scored in double-figures for the Statesmen (3-2). Roderick Ollie scored 14 points, followed by Dmitry Pirshin, who poured in 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Delta State. 

Pirshin, a senior from Moscow, Russia, set a personal career high in points as a member of the Statesmen.

Jared Strode scored a game-high 18 points for North Alabama. Rory Miller and Warrick Mastin added 14 points apiece.

Marqueys Brown put the Statesmen ahead for good with a layup off a feed from Chad Akins with 2:04 remaining in the game. It was the first of five straight points scored by the Statesmen between the two-minute and one-minute marks in the second half.

Brown turned in a double-double performance for Delta State, scoring 11 points and hauling in 12 rebounds. He also added three blocks to his line on the stat sheet.

Akins handed out 11 assists to go along with eight points.

The Statesmen return to action Thursday when they travel to West Georgia. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EST.
