PENSACOLA, Fla. – Delta State used a 15-2 run early in the second half to erase a nine-point deficit and roared to a 75-63 win over West Florida on Sunday.
Roderick Ollie (Indianola, Miss./UAB) turned in double-double totals of 12 points and 10 rebounds and was one four Statesmen to score in double-figures.
The Statesmen (5-2) won their third consecutive contest. West Florida fell to 3-5 with the loss.
Jeremie Davis (Arcadia, La./Univ. of New Orleans) scored a Delta State career-high 13 points to lead the Statesmen.
Eric Spencer (Marion, Ark./Arkansas-Fort Smith) and
Joe McCray (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Univ. of Nebraska) scored 11 points apiece.
Ken Mitchell led the Argonauts with game highs of 19 points and 11 rebounds.
The first half was evenly contested as neither team was able to build more than a five-point advantage. The first 20 minutes of the game featured five ties and five lead changes. West Florida took a 31-29 lead into the midgame break.
The Argonauts shot only 43 percent (13-of-30) from the field during the first half, but held the Statesmen to under 30 percent (11-of-39, 28 percent). West Florida held a 27-18 advantage in rebounding after the game's first 20 minutes.
West Florida came out firing in the second half and used a 9-2 run to establish a 40-31 lead, which would mark the Argonauts' largest advantage of the contest.
Just when it appeared as if West Florida was going to run away with the contest, the Statesmen began to battle back, and embarked on their 15-2 run between the 17:33 and 13:19. Davis' fast-break layup gave the Statesmen a 46-42 lead.
The Argonauts would score the next four points to cut Delta State's lead to one, but were unable to reclaim the lead. The Statesmen used a 17-4 run between the 12:30 and 8:47 marks to establish a 14-point lead, their largest of the game.
The Statesmen shot 53 percent (17-of-32) from the floor in the second half and shot 39 percent (28-of-71) for the game.
Delta State's biggest advantage over West Florida came from its bench, as the Statesmen reserves outscored their counterparts 34-3. In addition to the 24 points from Davis and Spencer,
David Clark (Silver Creek, Miss./Lawrence County HS) scored eight points in the game.
The Statesmen will return to action Tuesday when they will visit Valdosta State to complete their two-game road swing. Tipoff against the Blazers is scheduled for 8 p.m. EST.
