Lady Statesmen power past West Florida 80-44

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Shameka Russell and Veronica Walker both reached the 20-point and 10- rebound mark as the No. 3 Delta State Lady Statesmen get past West Florida 80-44 Sunday afternoon.

Russell (Waynesboro, Miss./Southeastern Louisiana) scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds – both career highs – as Delta State improved to 8-0 during the 2009-2010 season. She topped her previous mark of 18 points, which she had reached by halftime.

Walker (Indianola, Miss./Gentry HS) proved to be just as difficult for the Argonauts to contain, as she scored 20 points and hauled in 10 rebounds.

Trevonna Cannon (Long Beach, Calif./Southeast Missouri State) came off the bench to score 10 points for the Lady Statesmen.

The Lady Statesmen's inside presence and command of the glass proved to be too much for the Lady Argonauts (5-3). Delta State outrebounded their hosts 53-28, and held a 26-9 advantage in offensive rebounds.

The Delta State defense gave the Argonauts fits throughout the game as the Lady Statesmen forced 21 West Florida turnovers.

After falling behind 3-2 barely 45 seconds into the game, the Lady Statesmen seized control of the game with a 10-run over the next six minutes. Russell's putback off her own miss at the 13:18 mark gave the Lady Statesmen a 12-3 lead.

West Florida would pull to within seven points twice more in the half, but a 6-0 Delta State run between the 11:00 and 9:15 marks would stretch the Lady Statesmen's lead to 13 points. Delta State led by as many as 16 during the first half, and took a 39-27 lead into halftime.

The Lady Statesmen shot 50 percent from the field (19-of-38) during the first half, while limiting West Florida to 40 percent shooting (8-of-20). For the game, Delta State shot 47 percent (37-of-78) from the field.

Bug Cooper (Indianola, Miss./Gentry HS) scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds in addition to recording four assists from her point guard position. Danesha Henderson (Guy, Ark./Guy Perkins HS scored six points and registering five steals.

Tiffany Williams scored 16 points to lead the Argonauts. Amy Drake added 13 points for West Florida.

The Lady Statesmen return to action Tuesday when they visit Valdosta State to complete their two-game road trip. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. EST.
