Lady Statesmen trounce West Georgia 62-43

The No. 4 Lady Statesmen improved to 6-0 after defeating West Georgia
CARROLLTON, Ga. – Veronica Walker scored 15 points and was one of three Lady Statesmen to score in double-figures as No. 4 Delta State breezed to a 62-43 win over West Georgia on Thursday.

Walker (Indianola, Miss./Gentry HS) shot 7-of-11 from the field in only 18 minutes of action. Shameka Russell (Waynesboro, Miss./Southeastern Louisiana) added 14 points, followed by Moe Bell(Madison, Miss./Madison-Ridgeland Academy), who chipped in with 12 points.

The Lady Statesmen improved their undefeated record to 6-0, while West Georgia dropped to 2-5.

West Georgia kept pace with their ranked visitors for the first six minutes of the game before the Lady Statesmen embarked on a 14-0 run to establish a 20-6 lead at the 8:27 mark of the first half. Delta State's lead never dipped into single-digits for the remainder of the contest.

The Lady Statesmen shot 49 percent from the field (25-of-51), and were 7-of-15 (47 percent) from behind the 3-point arc. Bell shot 4-of-8 from the 3-point circle, followed by Bug Cooper (Indianola, Miss./Gentry HS) who was 2-of-5 from long range.

Cooper scored eight points and tallied six assists and four steals. Jessica Collins (Jackson, Miss./Itawamba CC) registered five points and five assists.

The Lady Statesmen return to action Saturday when they host NAIA opponent Tougaloo College. Tipoff was moved up three hours from its original stated time to a 1 p.m. tipoff.
