Delta State fought hard for two wins on the second day of the Charger Chillout, outscoring Southern Indiana 8-6, and outlasting Missouri-St. Louis for a 2-1 victory in eight innings.
The Lady Statesmen (10-2) won a home run derby contest in a stiff wind blowing out to rightfield against Southern Indiana, with each team hitting two.
Delta State scored first in the bottom of the second on an RBI-single by
Brittany Tillery, but the Screaming Eagles (0-9) answered with a three-run blast deep to left-centerfield by Sara Loete, a 2008 All-American. The home run gave Southern Indiana a 3-1 lead.
Kristi Basso tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when
Kristi Basso hit her second home run of the season, a two-run fly ball over the rightfield fence.
The Lady Statesmen added five more runs to stretch the lead to 8-3 in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run triple by Tillery, who went 4-for-4 and was a home run away from the cycle, and a two-run home run by
Paige Silverthorn, her second of the year.
Southern Indiana cut the lead to two in the top of the sixth with a two-run home run by Lindsay Raikes and an RBI-single by Loete.
Edie Oliver allowed just one hit in the top of the seventh to secure her fifth win of the season. She allowed three runs, all unearned, on three hits with four strikeouts in three innings of relief.
Dawn McClellan took the loss for Southern Indiana, allowing six runs, two earned, on eight hits with four strikeouts and three walks in 4.1 innings.
Basso went 3-for-4 in the contest with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Silverthorn went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
The Lady Statesmen found themselves in the middle of a pitching duel when they took the field against the University of Missouri-St. Louis (3-6) and pitcher Allyson DeFosset, but
Edie Oliver was up to the challenge.
The Lady Statesmen had just one hit going into the top of the sixth, but Oliver held the Tritons to just two hits and the game was knotted at 0-0. Then
Courtney Chism led off the sixth with a strikeout, but reached first base on a passed ball. After a single by Tillery, Oliver singled to left field to plate Chism for the game's first run.
Missouri-St. Louis answered in the bottom of the sixth with a run on Carolyn Oquendo's RBI-single.
Neither team could break the tie in the seventh, but it was the Lady Statesmen that came through with the big hit that counted in extra innings. With
Kate Moreland standing at second base, pinch running for Basso with the international tiebreaker rule in effect, Chism laid down a sacrifice bunt, advancing Moreland to third. Tillery then hit a ball into the gap between the third baseman and shortstop for what proved to be the game winning RBI.
Oliver (6-1) left runners stranded on first and third after an intentional walk to Oquendo, who was 3-for-3, to earn her second win of the day. She allowed just one run on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks in eight innings.
DeFosset (0-6) was charged with the loss, allowing two runs, both unearned, on five hits with 13 strikeouts and one walk.
The Lady Statesmen will close out the Charger Chillout Sunday, Feb. 22, with Augusta State at 11:00 a.m. and Columbus State at 3:30 p.m.
