CLEVELAND- The Delta State University baseball team combined for 37 runs in 14 innings, as the Statesmen swept visiting Kentucky State, 13-4 and 24-4, Wednesday afternoon at Ferriss Field.
The winter like temperatures didn't seem to have an effect on the Statesmen, who extend their winning streak to seven games and improve to 13-9 on the season, while the Thorobreds fall to 1-7.
In game one, the Statesmen trailed 1-0 early in the first and responded with 11 unanswered runs in the third and fourth innings. Delta State plated 10 runs for the second time in as many games in the third, as they scored 10 runs on just four hits.
Cesar Rodriguez (1-1) gets the win, pitching 4.0 innings while giving up one run on no hits.
In game two, Delta State was able to take advantage of poor pitching from Kentucky State, who gave up 13 unanswered runs, including 11 in the second inning alone.
Michael Niemann capped off the inning with a grand slam for his first home run of the season.
Kentucky State tried to make a game of it in the late innings, but the Statesmen were able to knock in seven more in the bottom of the sixth to seal the win.
Trey Griffin (2-0) grabbed the win, despite giving up two runs on three hits in 2.0 innings of work.
Niemann finished 3-for-4 on the day with four RBIs and a grand slam to lead the Statesmen.
The Statesmen will open up Gulf South Conference play on the road as they battle Ouachita Baptist this Saturday and Sunday in Arkadelphia. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
