CLEVELAND - The No. 2 ranked Lady Statesmen (12-0, 1-0 GSC) of Delta State University continue Gulf South Conference play this week with a pair of league games versus the University of Arkansas-Monticello (7-6, 1-0 GSC) and Christian Brothers University (9-4, 0-1 GSC). DSU travels to UAM on Thursday, Jan. 14, while hosting CBU Saturday, Jan. 16 at 4 p.m. inside Walter Sillers Coliseum.
Behind
Veronica Walker's 23 points and seven rebounds, the Lady Statesmen remained perfect on the season and opened GSC play with a 71-60 victory at Ouachita Baptist on Jan. 9 in Arkadelphia, Ark., at Bill Vining Arena.
A trio of Lady Statesmen enter this week's games playing quite well. Walker ranks third in the GSC in scoring at 18.0 ppg, while leading the league and ranking fourth in the NCAA in field goal percentage at 66.4 percent.
Bug Cooper, who has 510 career assists to rank seventh all-time in GSC history, is leading the nation in assists at 7.58 per game, while
Shameka Russell is growing into a dominant small forward - averaging 11.5 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.
The Lady Statesmen lead the GSC in scoring defense (50.8 ppg) and field goal percentage defense (33.3 percent) with two games this week against high-scoring opposition on the horizon.
Both games will be broadcast on the Statesmen Sports Network starting 15 minutes prior to tip-off. Jimmy Smith, J.T. Webb and Alan Wiederhold have the call.
