CLEVELAND – The Delta State University Statesmen (12-3, 3-0 GSC) continue Gulf South Conference play this week with a pair of games against West Division foes – Southern Arkansas (7-9, 2-1 GSC) and No. 1 ranked Arkansas Tech (16-0, 3-0 GSC). DSU hosts SAU on Thursday, Jan. 21 for an 8 p.m. tip-off at Sillers Coliseum before traveling to Arkansas Tech on Saturday, Jan. 23. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Russellville, Ark. at Tucker Coliseum.
The Statesmen have played well of late, winning seven in a row, including an 83-73 road victory at Arkansas-Monticello on Jan. 14.
Chad Akins scored a career-high 24 points over the Boll Weevils.
Akins, a 6-foot senior point guard from Madison, continues to chase the DSU record for career assists. Entering this week's games versus SAU and ATU, Akins has 486 assists, needing just 64 dimes to break Scott Nagy's school record (549).
The Statesmen's winning streak and undefeated conference record was in jeopardy Saturday as Delta State hosted Christian Brothers. The Buccaneers scored the final eight points of the game but ultimately fell 56-55.
Eric Spencer led the Statesmen with 12 points in the game.
