Lady Statesmen defeat UAM 78-48 as Bell sets career treys record

Moe Bell became DSU's all-time leader in 3-point field goals
CLEVELAND – The records keep falling for the No. 12 Delta State Lady Statesmen.

Less than two weeks after the school's NCAA-era career assists record fell, junior guard Moe Bell assured her place among the Delta State athletic legends when she knocked down her record-breaking 188th career 3-pointer in the first half of the Lady Statesmen's 78-48 win over Arkansas-Monticello at Sillers Coliseum on Thursday.

Bell (Madison, Miss./Madison-Ridgeland Academy) entered the game with 186 career triples, one off the mark held by Tanya Redmond, who finished her DSU career in 1998. Bell tied the mark at the 12:01 mark in the first half, and then claimed the record for herself with a long-range shot from the left corner with 4:35 remaining before halftime.

Bell finished the game with three 3-pointers and 11 points, and was one of four players scoring double-figures for the Lady Statesmen (18-2, 7-2 Gulf South Conference). She was matched by Bug Cooper (Indianola, Miss./Gentry HS), who turned in a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Cooper recently set DSU's career record for assists in the NCAA era.

While Bell was enjoying a career night, DSU's Shameka Russell (Waynesboro, Miss./Southeastern Louisiana) flirted with offensive perfection. Russell came off the bench knocked down all eight field goal attempts she took and was 2-of-4 from the free throw line for a game-high 18 points.

Russell also led the team with eight rebounds.

Veronica Walker (Indianola, Miss./Gentry HS) scored 14 points for Delta State and registered team-highs of four steals and three blocked shots.

Chelsea Johnson scored 10 points to lead Arkansas-Monticello (9-12, 3-6 GSC).

The Lady Statesmen were putting the ball through the basket with ease in the first half, draining 67 percent (18-of-27) of their shots. Russell scored 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting off the bench, while Cooper also contributed 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting before halftime.

Walker chipped with eight points prior to the midgame break.

Delta State held Arkansas-Monticello to 44 percent (10-of-23) shooting in the first half, but the Cotton Blossoms were able to stay in the game thanks to sinking 10 out of 11 free throws (91 percent).

The Lady Statesmen led 39-30 at halftime, and were holding that same nine-point advantage roughly three minutes into the second half before they embarked13-2 run to take 56-36 at the lead 10:02 mark.

Delta State shot 10-of-21 (48 percent) from the field during the second half and finished the game with a 58 percent clip (28-of-48).

The win was the 46th consecutive home triumph for the Lady Statesmen dating back to 2007.

The Lady Statesmen return to action Saturday when they travel to Memphis to face Christian Brothers. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
