CLEVELAND – The No. 12 Lady Statesmen (19-2, 8-2 GSC) of Delta State University face another challenging week of Gulf South Conference competition, as they travel to Southern Arkansas University (7-14, 2-7 GSC) on Thursday, Feb. 18 and host No. 5 Arkansas Tech University (22-1, 9-1 GSC) on Saturday, Feb. 20 at Sillers Coliseum to close out the week.
With the No. 5 Golden Suns and No. 1 Wonder Boys of Arkansas Tech visiting Sillers Coliseum on Saturday, the Lady Statesmen and Statesmen basketball teams are encouraging fans to wear white as they attempt to “white out” their opponents for Arkansas Tech. Both teams are also aiming to give their visitors some “payback” after ATU swept Delta State earlier this season in Russellville, Ark.
The Lady Statesmen have taken coach Sandra Rushing's call for execution and ran with it over the last three games, defeating the opposition by an average of 34.3 points per game. This past week, the green-and-white waxed Arkansas-Monticello 78-48 behind
Moe Bell's 20 points and pummeled Christian Brothers 83-46 thanks in part to
Veronica Walker's 25 points and 11 rebounds.
Last week also brought another career record tumbling to the ground, as
Moe Bell, a 5-foot-10 junior from Madison, set a new school record for career three pointers made with 191. Bell broke the mark in the 78-48 win over UAM by hitting on 5-of-12 three point attempts. The record was previously held by Tanya Redmond (187), who played from 1995-98 at DSU.
Both games will be featured on the Statesmen Sports Network starting 15 minutes prior to tipoff with the “SouthGroup Insurance Locker Room Report.” Jimmy Smith and J.T. Webb have the call.
