CLEVELAND-The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team closed out their round robin tournament 2-2 after a split on Sunday.
After three separate one run games on Saturday, the excitement continued at University Field on Sunday, as there were three more one run contests.
Nova Southeastern defeated West Georgia 4-3 in comeback fashion, and followed that up with a 2-1 victory over Delta State. The Lady Statesmen bounced back from the loss by defeating West Georgia 4-3 in the final game.
In game one, Nova Southeastern (13-5) wanted to extract some revenge after falling 5-4 to the Lady Statesmen (11-5) on Saturday.
The no. 15 ranked Sharks jumped ahead 1-0 in the top of the first, when Lauren Lopez scored all the way from first base with two outs on a ground ball to third by Jessica Hernandez.
Hernandez was ruled safe on a close play at first, and Lopez ducked under the tag by DSU catcher
Kim Hensley.
NSU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth, when Hernandez knocked in her second run of the day with a towering home run over the left center field wall.
The Lady Statesmen countered in the bottom half of the inning, when
Edie Oliver drove in
Brittany Eikner, who started the inning with a double to right center field.
DSU did not threaten in the bottom of the seventh. The Sharks retired
Taylor Hughes,
Paige Silverthorn and
Crista Richard in order to seal the win.
Hernandez was the star at the plate for the Sharks. She had two of NSU'S five hits, and both RBI's.
The Lady Statesmen were lead at the plate by Eikner and Oliver, who both were 2-for-3.
Oliver (4-3) took the loss in the circle. The senior allowed only five hits in seven innings, with five strikeouts.
Dani Carron (7-1) got the win for the Sharks. The right-hander scattered seven hits, while striking out five DSU hitters.
In game two, the Lady Statesmen had to bounce back quickly to face West Georgia.
The Wolves defeated the Lady Statesmen 2-1 in eight innings on Saturday.
The Lady Statesmen bounced back, albeit in dramatic fashion to defeat the Wolves 4-3.
DSU overcame 11 runners left on base, including two bases loaded situations, but had timely hits in the win.
After UWG (7-11) picked up a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first, DSU scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning, and did not look back.
The Lady Statesmen strung together four straight hits with two outs in scoring the two runs.
Kim Hensley had the RBI's for DSU. Hensley drove in
Brooke Allgood with a double, and Carr drove in Hensley with a hit to center field.
The Wolves put a scare into the Lady Statesmen in the top of the seventh inning. With two outs, Lindsey Ellenburg hit a towering fly ball off of the center field wall to plate a third run, but
Kate Moreland would slam the door on the Wolves to end the game.
Crista Richard, Hensley, Carr and Oliver each had two hits for DSU in the win. Hensley had two RBI's.
Moreland (4-1) earned the win. The senior allowed three runs on 10 hits, with two strikeouts.
Kate Gorzyca (1-6) took the loss for UWG.
The Lady Statesmen return to action on March 3, as they will travel to LSU-Alexandria for a non-conference doubleheader.
