CLEVELAND-Sunday's doubleheader between the Southern Arkansas Lady Muleriders and the Delta State University Lady Statesmen was nearly a replica of the previous days action, with one exception, freshman pitcher
Brittany Gonzales was simply perfect.
The Lady Statesmen (14-13, 2-6) were shut out 3-0 in the first game, but Gonzales threw a perfect game for the Lady Statesmen in a 6-0 victory in game two.
Southern Arkansas (5-12, 2-2) used the same formula as they did in the first game Saturday, as they raced out with a 2-0 first inning lead on the starting pitcher
Edie Oliver.
The Lady Statesmen had one serious threat, which was in the first inning.
Crista Richard led off the bottom of the first with a double to left field, and was then advanced on a sac bunt by
Chelsea Carr.
SAU starter Alex Doyle retired
Brittany Eikner and
Courtney Clark to end the threat.
SAU added one insurance run in the seventh inning to seal the deal.
The DSU hitters were again baffled by Doyle, as the Lady Statesmen had only four hits in the game. SAU finished with nine.
Kate Moreland came in relief of
Edie Oliver with two outs in the third inning. Oliver (5-9) took the loss.
Doyle (3-5) earned the win. The junior went all seven innings, and allowed only four hits. She also struck out three DSU hitters.
Game two was all about Gonzales (5-1). The freshman pitcher added another chapter in DSU softball history with a perfect game. The Denham Springs, La., native only struck out two hitters, but relied on her teammates for solid fielding in the game.
DSU started the scoring quickly, when they jumped ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning.
Brooke Allgood doubled home Richard to begin the scoring.
DSU added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Kim Hensley led off the inning with a double to right-center field. Pinch runner
Anna Wesleigh Riggs scored from third after
Chelsea Carr laid down a perfect bunt.
Richard added a two RBI base hit, which gave the Lady Statesmen their third and fourth runs of the game.
DSU capitalized on a pair of errors in the fifth inning, and scored two runs off relief pitcher Candice Collier.
The perfect game was achieved off the bat of SAU'S Denise Amador. Amador hit a hard line drive directly into the glove of Eikner, at shortstop, for the last out of the game.
Richard led the way at the plate for DSU. The Crowley, La., native went 3-for-4 at the plate, and added two RBI's.
Allgood and Oliver also added a pair of hits for DSU. The Lady Statesmen had 10 hits in the win.
DSU returns to action on Sat. March 20, as they play host to Ouachita Baptist. First pitch is scheduled for one p.m. at University Field.
