Lady Statesmen hit their way to a pair of big wins over OBU

The Lady Statesmen were all smiles after taking two games from Ouachita Baptist
CLEVELAND-The Delta State University softball team picked up what could be considered their two biggest wins of the season here Saturday afternoon, as they took a pair of games from Ouachita Baptist.

The Lady Statesmen (16-13, 4-6) crushed OBU 8-1 in the first game, and followed that up with eight more runs with an 8-5 victory.

OBU (24-8, 6-4) jumped ahead quickly in the top of the first in game one, when Sarah Bell crushed a two out home run to center field.

This would be the only run OBU could muster from DSU starter Edie Oliver.

DSU answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning.

All but one Lady Statesman had a hit in game one against OBU starter Kristen Rigsbee (13-2).

Crista Richard picked up three hits in the contest to go along with an RBI and a run scored.

Brittany Eikner was only one-for-four in the game, but made it count. Eikner's two RBI single in the fifth gave the Lady Statesmen a 6-1 lead.

Courtney Clark, Chelsea Carr and Paige Silverthorn also had two hits each for DSU.

Oliver (5-9) was outstanding in the circle, as she went the distance in the win. Oliver allowed one run on seven hits, with four strike outs and no walks.

The Lady Statesmen, who have struggled recently at the plate, had 13 hits in the win.

Game two would be much the same for DSU hitting.

Ouachita Baptist broke up the streak of Brittany Gonzales in the top of the second, when a runner reached on an error. Gonzales had retired the last 28 hitters she faced.

OBU scored their first run in the top of the third, and with that took a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Statesmen bats came alive in the fourth inning, when DSU scored two runs off OBU starting pitcher Kayci Wilson (4-3).

As was the case in the first game, eight-of-nine DSU hitters recorded hits, and all reached base safely.

Senior Courtney Clark stole the show at the plate. The Sheridan, Ark., native was three-for-four in game two. Her three hits produced four big RBI's. With the three hits, Clark extended her hitting streak to 14 games.

Brooke Allgood also had a big day at the dish. Allgood was two-for-three with two RBI's and two runs scored.

The Lady Statesmen took an 8-2 lead into the top of the seventh, and Ouachita Baptist put in a valiant effort for a comeback, as they scored three runs off relief pitcher Kate Moreland.

Moreland worked two innings, and picked up her second six out save of the season.

Gonzales (5-1) continued her solid work in the circle. The Denham Springs, La., native went five innings, and allowed two runs on hits.

The same two teams will complete their four game set Sunday at University Field. Senior Day festivities are scheduled following game one. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
