CLEVELAND-It was fitting that on Senior Day at University Field, a freshman helped the Delta State University softball team to an 8-7 extra innings win in the first game, and a senior powered DSU to a 16-12 win in game two.
The Lady Statesmen (18-13, 6-6) earned their first four game Gulf South Conference sweep since April of 2009 with four wins over visiting Ouachita Baptist (24-10, 6-6).
OBU continued with a pattern against the Lady Statesmen when they scored a single run in the top of the first inning in game one. The Lady Statesmen stormed back with four runs in the second, taking a 4-1 lead. At that point, the drama was just beginning.
OBU took a 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth. After a bases loaded walk was issued by DSU starter
Edie Oliver, Haley Chambers delivered a two RBI single to center field for the Lady Tigers.
Paige Silverthorn had one of her two RBI's in the game in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at five. An RBI double in the bottom of the sixth by
Edie Oliver, which scored pinch runner
Nikki D'Aurelio, gave DSU a six five lead going to the top of the seventh.
The Lady Tigers would answer big in the top of the seventh. Relief pitcher Kristen Rigsbee blasted a two run home run, her second of the game, over the right field wall to put OBU on top 7-6.
Freshman second baseman
Taylor Hughes was the first hitter in the bottom of the seventh, and the Morton native delivered what was then the biggest hit of her young career. Hughes tied the game on the first pitch of the at bat with a home run to left center field.
With the score tied in the bottom of the eighth, Hughes again answered in a pressure situation. Hughes delivered a two out base hit to right field that scored pinch runner
Anna Wesleigh Riggs to win the game.
Crista Richard,
Brooke Allgood,
Edie Oliver,
Paige Silverthorn,
Brittany Eikner and Hughes all had multiple hits in the contest.
One of Eikner's hits was her first home run of the season, a two run shot in the second inning.
The Lady Statesmen pounded out 15 hits in the game, while OBU finished with nine.
Oliver (7-9) got the complete game win for DSU. Rigsbee (13-3) took the loss in relief of Sara Hanson.
In the beginning, game two appeared to be well in hand for the Lady Statesmen, but the Lady Tigers showed why they are a team to be reckoned with in the GSC West Division.
DSU batted around in the bottom of the first inning and raced out to a 6-0 lead.
The Lady Statesmen took control in the third inning when an Allgood grand slam gave the Lady Statesmen 11-3 cushion.
Going into the top of the fifth, OBU needed at least two runs to keep the game alive, and got much more than that. The Lady Tigers scored an amazing seven runs in the top of the fifth inning, making the score 13-11, to put a scare into the Senior Day crowd.
Senior
Courtney Clark would answer with her second home run of the year, a solo shot, to put DSU up 14-11 in the bottom of the fifth.
DSU would again use Allgood's heroics in the bottom of the sixth inning. The senior's double to center field drove in her sixth and seventh runs of the game. Allgood finished the game with two singles, a double and a home run.
Oliver, in relief slammed the door on OBU in the seventh inning to preserve the win.
Richard continued her hot hitting for DSU, with a three-for-five output in game two. Clark,
Kim Hensley,
Chelsea Carr and Silverthorn all had multiple hits in game two.
The Lady Statesmen, who came into the series needing a lift, had 55 hits in the four game series.
Brittany Gonzales (6-1) picked up the win in game two for DSU. Kayci Wilson (7-5) took the loss for OBU.
The Lady Statesmen will return to action on Saturday, as they will travel to Memphis, Tenn., to open a four game series with the Christian Brothers Lady Buccaneers.
