CLEVELAND-After dropping a pair of games to Arkansas Monticello on Saturday, the Delta State University softball team was not able to bounce back, and lost two more games to UAM on Sunday.
The Lady Statesmen (12-10) dropped game one on Sunday 10-1 in six innings, and fell 6-2 in the series finale.
UAM (15-4) used a five run third inning, after scoring a run in the first, in game one to blow things open. The Blossoms also added a run in the fourth and fifth innings, before scoring a pair in the sixth.
Emilie Hobbs and Becca Tipton both had three hits each in the victory for UAM, while
Courtney Clark and
Taylor Hughes both had two hits each for the Lady Statesmen.
Hughes had the lone RBI in the second inning for DSU.
Starter
Edie Oliver took the loss, going three innings, giving up six runs on ten hits.
Kate Moreland also pitched three innings, and gave up four runs on seven hits.
Game two would be a bit closer, but the Lady Statesmen could not string together hits against UAM starting pitcher Amanda Nordberg.
All but one starter had a base hit for the Blossoms in a 14 hit effort. DSU finished the day with seven.
The lone bright spot of the day for DSU came in the bottom of the fourth inning when
Courtney Clark hit her first home run of the season.
The two run shot to center scored
Brittany Eikner and were the only runs of the game for DSU.
Brittany Gonzales (3-1) took her first loss of the season. The freshman hurler went the distance, and gave up six runs on 14 hits with one strikeout.
The Lady Statesmen will have a chance to end their five game skid on Wed. March 10 as they play host to Mississippi Valley State University.
First pitch at University Field is scheduled for six p.m.
