Lady Statesmen end five game losing streak with 2-0 win over North Alabama

DECATUR, Ala.-The Delta State University softball team broke a five game losing skid with a 2-0 win over the University of North Alabama on Saturday at Wilson Morgan Park.

With the win, the Lady Statesmen move into a tie for third place with Ouachita Baptist. DSU owns the tiebreaker over OBU by virtue of a four game sweep over the Lady Tigers earlier in the season.

The Lady Statesmen (25-20, 11-13) rode the arm of pitcher Edie Oliver in the win. The senior threw a complete game shutout, and allowed only four hits by the Lions.

UNA (21-24, 7-11) also used strong pitching from starter Laurin Watts. Watts allowed two runs, one earned on five hits. No Lady Statesmen runs came by base hits.

A sacrifice fly from Paige Silverthorn opened the scoring in the bottom of the second, scoring pinch runner Jackie Kelley.

In the top of the third, the Lady Statesmen loaded the bases with one out, but could manage only one run.  Oliver hit a slow ground ball to third base that scored Nikki D'Aurelio from third base.

Oliver would go on to retire the next nine UNA hitters before surrendering a pair of two out base hits in the fourth, which was one of two scoring threats in the game for the Lions.

Watts (7-13) retired 12 of the final 13 Lady Statesmen hitters after allowing the second run of the game.

Oliver (12-11) allowed only four hits in the contest in the win.

The Lady Statesmen will try to continue their winning ways on Sunday, as they take on the University of West Georgia at 10 a.m.

DSU will close out their weekend with a battle against NO. 11 Alabama Huntsville. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
