Lady Statesmen shutout in final two games in Decatur

DECATUR, Ala.-The Delta State University softball team was shut out twice on the final day of the Gulf South Conference Crossover at Wilson Morgan Park. The Lady Statesmen (25-22, 11-15) fell 3-0 to West Georgia and 9-0 in five innings against Alabama Huntsville.

DSU managed to record only six hits in the two losses. In game one, West Georgia (15-35, 3-15) scored their first run on an RBI double by Crissy Rainwater in the top of the fourth inning.

The Lady Statesmen threatened in the bottom of the second, but starting pitcher Ashley West retired two straight hitters with the bases loaded to end the threat.

The first run was all UWG needed, but they added a pair insurance runs the top of the seventh.

Starting pitcher Edie Oliver (12-12) was once again solid, but did not have the run support from DSU hitters. Oliver struck out seven, and went the distance. The senior is now in second place all-time in the Delta State record book with 273 career strikeouts.

West (2-2) earned the win for UWG. The freshman gave up four hits, with two strikeouts and two walks.

Oliver allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits, with seven strkeouts.

In game two, the Lady Statesmen were matched up with the NO. 11 Alabama Huntsville Chargers.

UAH (33-7, 18-1) did not waste time jumping on starter Kate Moreland. Moreland allowed three first inning runs, two of which were the result of wild pitches.

The top of the second was equally unkind for the DSU pitcher. Moreland allowed five runs in the inning, only one of which were earned.

Moreland (4-6) was lifted in the top of the third for Brittany Gonzales. Gonzales allowed one run on four hits, with four strikeouts. Moreland allowed eight runs on six hits, with two strikeouts and one walk.

Whitney Hawkins (16-2) picked up the win for UAH. Hawkins allowed two hits, and struck out three with one walk.

Brittany Eikner and Paige Silverthorn recorded the only hits for DSU.

The Lady Statesmen finished the Crossover with a 1-5 mark, and are currently tied for the fourth and final GSC Tournament spot with Ouachita Baptist. DSU holds the tiebreaker as a result of a 4-0 series win over OBU.

The Lady Statesmen will return to the diamond on Thursday, April 15th for a non-conference game versus Mississippi Valley State in Itta Bena. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
