Oliver allows one run in sixteen innings in sweep over Arkansas Tech

Pitcher Edie Oliver allowed only one run in 16 innings pitched
RUSSELLVILLE, Ark.-Senior pitcher Edie Oliver allowed only one run over 16 innings in the circle, as the Delta State University softball team (27-23, 13-15) swept a doubleheader over Arkansas Tech (20-21, 10-13) 6-0 and 4-3  in nine innings.

Oliver also went a combined 3-for-8 at the plate with three RBI's, including a two RBI base hit that tied the second game at three in the fifth inning.

In game one, Courtney Clark provided the spark. The senior went 2-for-3 with five RBI's. The Lady Statesmen did not record a hit until the third inning, but had four straight hits with a two out rally that produced three runs. The inning was highlighted by a two RBI double by Clark.

The heroics by Clark did not stop there. With a pair of runners on in the fifth, she blasted her third home run of the season to give the Lady Statesmen a 6-0 lead.

Oliver (14-12) went the distance. The senior allowed five hits with four strikeouts. Chelsea Evanoff (10-10) took the loss. Evanoff went 4.1 innings and allowed six runs on eight hits. Sarah Taylor pitched 2.2 innings of relief for ATU, and allowed two hits.

ATU struck quickly in game two. The Golden Suns recorded three straight hits against DSU starter Brittany Gonzales. Gonzales was lifted after facing three hitters, and was charged with two earned runs. Oliver was called upon again by coach Casey Charles, and she did not disappoint.

The Lady Statesmen made the score 2-1 in the top of the fifth inning, when Paige Silverthorn had an RBI double to left field that plated Chelsea Carr from first base. However, ATU scored their lone run of the day against Oliver in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 3-1.

With one out in the top of the sixth, Oliver singled up the middle and drove in Brittany Eikner and Crista Richard to tie the score at 3-3.

The two teams had a stalemate until the top of the ninth inning, until Carr singled up the middle to score Nikki D'Aurelio with two outs, making the score 4-3.

Oliver slammed the door on the Suns in the bottom of the ninth to finish the game. Oliver finished game two with one run allowed on seven hits with one strikeout.

Sarah Taylor (4-4) took the loss in relief. Taylor allowed one earned run on three hits in four innings of work. Morgan Rodgers worked 5.0 innings, and allowed three runs on four hits.

Richard was the only DSU player with multiple hits in game one, with a 2-for-4 performance.

The Lady Statesmen will attempt to finish the sweep on Sunday. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 12 p.m.

DSU needs two more wins to clinch a spot in the Gulf South Conference Tournament.
