Lady Statesmen miss chances in doubleheader loss at Arkansas Tech

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark.-The Delta State University softball team left 13 runners on base through 14 innings, and were swept 2-1 and 4-0 against Arkansas Tech at the Chartwells Complex on Sunday.

DSU (27-24, 13-16) went to their ace, Edie Oliver, for the third straight game. Arkansas Tech (22-22, 12-14) opened the scoring in the bottom of the third with Dana Stephenson triple that scored Natalie Magie from first base. The run was only the second run allowed by Oliver in 18 innings.

Tech's Tiphani Moon hit her team leading 11th home run of the season in the fourth inning. The solo shot proved to be the winning run.

The Lady Statesmen made the score 2-1 in the top of the fifth when Paige Silverthorn scored from third on a wild pitch by Chelsea Evanoff.

Sarah Taylor shut the door on DSU for 2.1 innings to finish the contest. Taylor allowed only one hit.

Oliver (14-14) took the loss. The Eupora native allowed two runs on five hits, with one strikeout.

Oliver had 2-of-3 Lady Statesmen hits with a 2-for-2 performance. Crista Richard had the other.

Evanoff (11-10) got the win for the Golden Suns. Evanoff allowed one run on two hits with one strikeout, and three walks.

The Lady Statesmen went with Oliver for the fourth straight game for the second contest. Tech jumped ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the first. The inning was highlighted by a Amy Kilpatrick two run home run for ATU.

Tech finished the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI triple for Stephenson. The triple was her second of the day.

Oliver pitched 6.0 innings in the loss. The senior allowed four runs, three earned on nine hits. Morgan Rodgers (7-8) pitched a complete game shutout for the Golden Suns. Rodgers allowed six hits, with one strikeout.

For the series, Oliver pitched all 28 innings, and allowed seven runs. She also went 6-of-13 at the plate in the series.

The losses conclude the regular season for DSU. The Lady Statesmen will be forced to watch the out of town scoreboards over the next week to decide their postseason fate.

Arkansas Monticello will be at Arkansas Tech, Henderson State takes on Southern Arkansas and Christian Brothers will be matched up with Ouachita Baptist to conclude the regular season. Each series will have an impact on the final Gulf South Conference standings.
