CLEVELAND-In a game statistically dominated by visiting Christian Brothers, the Delta State University Statesmen soccer team used a Matt Baker penalty kick, to pick up its first Gulf South Conference win 1-0 over the Bucs, Wednesday at Delta field.
A hand-ball inside the box in the 15th minute gave Baker the chance for his first goal of the year, and the Deniliquin, New South Wales, Australia native calmy beat CBU keeper Jaime Garcia to give the Statesmen (3-7, 1-2) the early lead.
CBU (2-6-1, 0-1) kept constant pressure on the Statesmen for the remainder of the contest, including a nine shot barage at DSU keeper
Flavio Romero.
Romero made a number of spectacular saves to keep the clean sheet, which was his second of the season.
CBU outshot the Statesmen 21-10 overall, and also had had nine shots on goal, compared to only three for DSU.
The Bucs also had 13 corner-kicks, compared to only two for the Statesmen.
The win was the first ever for the Statesmen over CBU on the pitch.
DSU will look for their second straight win on Tuesday, Oct. 7, as they travel to Jackson, Tenn., to take on Lambuth University. The Statesmen won the previous meeting 2-1 earlier in the season.
