No-hitter helps lead Belhaven to sweep over Lady Statesmen

CLEVELAND, Miss.-The Belhaven University Blazers took advantage of a no-hitter in game one, and some powerful offense in game two, winning  3-0 (8) and 11-3 (5)  over the Delta State Lady Statesmen Tuesday at University Field.

Sarah Burns was nearly equally matched in the circle by Victoria Combs in game one, but the Blazers pitcher held DSU (6-8) hitless for eight innings for the victory.

Combs did not allow a hit for 2.1 innings, when Katie Sanders recorded the first of six hits for BU.

Burns was perfect for 7.2 innings, before issuing a walk to Emily Todd.

With the international tiebreaker in effect, Belhaven exploded for three runs in the top of the eighth.

A no out double by Christina Jacques scored Rebecca Rousseau, giving BU (11-3) the 1-0 lead.

The Blazers scored two more runs on a bunt and a DSU error. DSU went in order in the bottom of the eighth to finish the contest.

Annalee Carr 2-4 was the only player in the game with multiple hits. Burns (7-2) struck out 13 DSU hitters in the win.

Combs (4-3) went all eight innings, and allowed only six hits.

In game two, the Blazers scored early and often, plating the first run of the game in the bottom of the first, following a wild pitch by DSU starter Brittany Gonzales.

Leading 7-0 with two outs in the top of the fifth, CeCee Austin smashed a grand slam to center field, to give the Blazers a commanding 11-0 lead.

Needing four runs in the bottom of the fifth to keep the game alive, the Lady Statesmen pounded five hits, but only managed three runs.

Rousseau worked four innings, and allowed only four hits in the win for BU, while Ashley Mottola allowed three runs on five hits in relief
