ARKADELPHIA, Ark.-The Ouachita Baptist Lady Tigers used a lot of hitting combined with a bit of luck in an 8-0 (5) and 1-0 (8) sweep over the Delta State University Lady Statesmen Saturday at Sully Anderson Field.
The Lady Tigers (7-10, 2-0) jumped ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first on the first of two home runs by center fielder Megan Askew.
OBU added to the lead in the bottom of the third with a two out RBI double by Kristen Rigsbee.
The Lady Statesmen (9-13, 1-5) were held to only four hits in the contest by Rigsbee.
Askew hit her second homer of the day in the bottom of the fourth, a towering grand slam to center field, making the score 7-0.
An RBI base hit by Bailey Sanders finished the scoring.
Victoria Combs (6-5) took the loss. The freshman allowed seven runs (five earned) on seven hits in 3.1 innings.
Sara Davis allowed one run on three hits in 0.2 innings of relief.
Rigsbee (2-6) picked up the win. The senior allowed four hits, and struck out six.
Emily Todd,
Marisa Sanders,
Maggie Jackson and
Lauren Lewis had the hits for DSU.
Game two was a much different story, as DSU starter
Brittany Gonzales allowed only three hits through six innings in the circle.
Gonzales failed to get any run support, as the Lady Statesmen left a season high 15 runners on base, including leaving the bases loaded in three straight innings.
In the top of the seventh,
Emily Todd led off the inning with a base hit to right field. Todd advanced to third base on a throwing error by right fielder Sara Strassemeyer.
Following a pair of walks, relief pitcher Abbi Frakes retired three straight hitters to end the threat.
Gonzales avoided a threat in the bottom of the seventh, with a two out strike out of pinch hitter Mallory Green, with runners on second and third.
Rigsbee hit the game winning single in the bottom of the eighth that scored Megan Askew from second.
Gonzales (2-7) allowed one run on seven hits in the loss. Frakes (1-3) picked up the win in three innings of relief work.
Crista Richard, Sanders and
Christina Hunter each had two hits.
The teams will finish the four game set on Sunday at 1 p.m.
