Lady Statesmen back in postseason contention with sweep over SAU

MAGNOLIA, Ark.-Starting pitchers Brittany Gonzales and Victoria Combs held the Southern Arkansas Lady Muleriders to only six hits each, as the Delta State Lady Statesmen won 4-2 and 5-1 at Lady Mulerider Field Sunday.

With the wins, the Lady Statesmen picked up their first sweep since taking four games over Ouachtia Baptist in 2010.

DSU (19-25, 10-12) and Henderson State each have 10 Gulf South Conference wins, and are currently tied for the fourth and final GSC West Division Tournament spot.

The Lady Statesmen scored all four runs in the first inning, which included a three RBI double to right-center field by Angela Carden. Christina Hunter then knocked in Carden with a single to right to finish the scoring for DSU.

All runs in the inning were unearned, as Marisa Sanders reached on an error with one out in the inning.

SAU (16-37, 6-18) scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the second on an RBI groundout by Brittany Wood that scored Chelsea Knox, who reached on a leadoff double.

With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the fifth, the Lady Muleriders scored the final run of the game on an RBI groundout to shortstop by Knox.

Gonzales then retired six-of-seven SAU hitters to finish the game.

SAU starter Julie Essary (6-13) allowed only two hits after the first inning in the loss. Gonzales (6-15) picked up the complete game win, allowing two runs on six hits.

Taylor Hughes finished 2-for-3 with a double, while Carden finished 2-for-2 with a double as well.

The Lady Muleriders took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second of game one when Wood doubled to left, driving in Taelor Wheeler, who reached second on an error.

The Lady Statesmen took the lead for the final time in the top of the third, scoring three runs on a wild pitch, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly by Hughes, that scored Richard.

DSU added one run in the fifth and sixth on RBI singles by Sanders and Meagan Church.

The Lady Statesmen out hit SAU 9-6 in the win. Combs (10-9) went all seven innings, and allowed only one unearned run with three strikeouts. She did not walk a hitter.

Richard had a game high three hits in a 3-for-4 effort. Sanders and Lauren Lewis each had two hits.

Arkansas Tech will visit Cleveland for a crucial GSC series, beginning Friday, April 22. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
