CLEVELAND-The Arkansas Tech Golden Suns scored a total of 27 runs over 13 innings to sweep the Delta State Lady Statesmen 17-1 and 10-7, Saturday at University Field.
The Lady Statesmen (20-28, 11-15) took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, when
Emily Todd sent an Amy Horne pitch over the left field fence with two outs.
ATU (28-17, 18-7) took the lead with three runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead. Tiphani Moon hit the first of her two home runs in the inning. Shelby Jo Fenter added an RBI triple, and Shanda Jimeson drove in Fenter with a bunt back to the pitcher.
Tech added four more runs in the top of the fifth, in a five hit inning that featured a two RBI double by Horne.
The Golden Suns exploded for 10 runs in the top of the sixth, taking advantage of four DSU errors in the inning. Moon and Haley Hudson each had home runs in the inning that featured eight hits.
Horne (4-1) went all six innings, as she earned the win. The freshman allowed one run on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Brittany Gonzales (7-16) took the loss, as she allowed three runs on four hits.
Sara Davis pitched two innings in relief, allowing 14 runs (ten earned) on 13 hits.
Victoria Combs faced one ATU hitter in the sixth.
Every Tech starter recorded a hit in the win. Moon finished 3-for-3 with three RBI's and three runs scored, while Hudson finished 2-for-5 with 5 RBI's. Fenter, Horne and Alicia Zack each finished with two RBI's.
Game two started out nearly just as well for the Golden Suns, as they took a 4-0 lead on two RBI hits by Fenter and Moon.
The Lady Statesmen responded with one of their biggest innings of the year, chasing ATU starter Alex Dole, plating six runs on three hits. DSU scored in the inning, using a bases loaded walk, hit by pitch and RBI hits by
Kendall Sizemore,
Meagan Church and
Marisa Sanders.
Tech cut the lead to 6-5 in the top of the fifth with another Hudson home run.
With two outs in the top of the sixth, ATU plated three runs on a play in which DSU recorded a pair of errors. Alicia Zack singled to left, scoring Hudson.
Taylor Hughes misplayed the groundball, and her throw to home plate got away from Sizemore, which allowed Moon and Zack to score.
Sanders knocked in her third run of the game in the bottom half of the inning, with a double to left-center that scored Hughes to make it an 8-7 lead for the visitors.
Maggie Jackson struck out looking to end the threat.
Amy Kilpatrick hit the second homerun of the game, and fifth of the day in the top of the seventh for ATU. The two run shot closed out the scoring at 10-7.
Chelsea Evanoff (3-3) picked up the win in relief of Doyle. Horne (2), finished up the game for the five out save for the Golden Suns. Doyle allowed six runs on two hits in 1.1 innings. Evanoff allowed one run on seven hits in four innings.
Combs (10-11) allowed 10 runs (seven earned) on nine hits in the loss. Gonzales pitched one inning of relief.
Sanders finished 2-for-4, and Church added a pair of hits for DSU. Hudson finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored for ATU.
The Lady Statesmen will finish out the regular season with a four game GSC series in Monticello, Ark, as they will take on the University of Arkansas Monticello Cotton Blossoms beginning Saturday, April 30. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
