Lady Statesmen use long ball to split with North Alabama in GSC action

Taylor Hughes had five RBIs in game one
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team used a pair of three run home runs in game one to split with the University of North Alabama of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader.
 
The Lady Statesmen (10-11, 1-3) held on for a 9-8 win in game one, and fell short in a comeback bid, as UNA (10-5, 1-1) held on for a 5-3 win in game two.
 
The Lions used a Callie Steadman two RBI double in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead in game one against DSU starting pitcher Ashleigh Allgood.
 
DSU took the lead in the bottom of the third with four runs in the inning, using an sacrifice fly by Brook Cline and a three run home run with two outs by catcher Taylor Hughes.
 
UNA allowed five more DSU runs to cross the plate in the bottom of the fourth with another three run home run, as Amber Adcock hit her second of the season. Hughes finished the scoring driving in two more runs with a double to right field.
 
Leadoff hitter Shelby Goodman answered for UNA in the top of the fifth, as she drove in a pair of runs with a single up the middle that scored Lindsay Bobrowski and Kathryn Young, making the score 9-4.
 
With the score still 9-4 a dramatic top of the seventh inning saw five straight UNA hitters reach base. The Lions took advantage, plating four runs on three hits in the inning. With the score at 9-6, DSU inserted pitcher Brittany Gonzales. Following an RBI groundout by Dani Colwill, Ali Barnette drove in a run on a fielders choice to the shortstop.
 
Gonzales then induced a ground ball to the shortstop by Young that resulted in a force play at second, to end the game.
 
Allgood (6-5) picked up the win, allowing eight runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts and a pair of walks. Gonzales picked up her first save of the season, throwing an inning of hitless relief.
 
Breanna Bailey (6-2) allowed seven runs on seven hits in the loss. Evalena Behr allowed two runs on two hits in 2.2 innings of relief.
 
Hughes finished 3-for-3 with a career best 5 RBIs. Maggie Jackson and Adcock each had two hits in the win. Goodman (3-for-3) and Steadman (3-for-4) helped the cause for UNA.
 
The Lions struck first again in game two, this time in the top of the third inning with an RBI single by Julie Mercer and a two RBI double by Colwill.
 
UNA added two more runs in the top of the fifth, pushing the score to 5-0 on Young's two RBI double.
 
DSU put a scare into the Lions in the bottom of the seventh with three runs in the inning, using RBIs by Caroline Womack, Jordan Cole and Taylor Holland. With runners on first and second with two outs, Allgood flew out to deep right field to end the game.
 
Haley Barnette (3-3) scattered eight hits in the win for the Lions, allowing three runs, one earned with one walk and a strikeout.
 
Gonzales (3-4) took the loss, as she allowed five runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work.
 
Sara Davis allowed only one hit in 2.1 innings of relief.
 
Marisa Sanders (2-for-3) was the only DSU player with multiple hits. Ashley Bonner, Colwill and Ali Barnette each had two hits for the Lions.
 
The Lady Statesmen have a quick turnaround, and will square off with No. 5 Alabama Huntsiville on Sunday, March 18. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at University Field.
