Lady Statesmen claim game two in dramatic fashion; split with No. 5 Alabama Huntsville

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Miss. – Brook Cline's base hit to center field in the eighth inning that scored Amber Adcock helped the Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team defeat the No. 5 University of Alabama Huntsville 4-3 in game two of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Sunday at University Field.
 
The Lady Chargers (17-6, 1-1) scored four runs in the top of the seventh to take game one 5-1.
 
DSU (11-12, 2-4) did not record a hit until the bottom of the fourth inning in the opening contest, as UAH starter Whitney Gilbert retired the first 10 hitters she faced.
 
UAH opened the scoring in the top of the fourth with an RBI single to left center field by Kellie Johnson.
 
Gilbert struck out two straight DSU hitters in the bottom of the fourth with runners on second and third.
 
UAH also induced a pop out by Marisa Sanders with a runner on second in the bottom of the sixth inning.
 
The Lady Chargers had four-of-five hitters reach base safely in the top of the seventh, en route to a four run inning.
 
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, pinch hitter Katie Hebert drove in Taylor Hughes with a single to left center that proved to be the only DSU run.
 
UAH recorded 12 hits against DSU starter Ashleigh Allgood (6-6). Sara Davis pitched 0.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit.
 
Toler (8-2) allowed five hits in the win.
 
Stephanie Needham (4-for-4) led the way for UAH at the plate. Jordan Cole of DSU had a streak snapped in which she reached base safely in the first 21 games for the Lady Statesmen.
 
The Lady Chargers loaded the bases in the top of the first inning with one out in game two, but DSU starter Brittany Gonzales picked up two straight outs to avoid the threat.
 
Johnson scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth after she stole third base, and the ensuing throw by catcher Taylor Hughes ended up right field.
 
DSU took the lead in the bottom of the bottom of the third with RBI hits by Adcock and Cline.
 
UAH tied the game in the top of the fifth when Abby MacKay's ground ball to the shortstop resulted in a fielding error, scoring pinch runner Morgan Hopkins.
 
Following a solo home run by Kelli Long, with only four outs remaining, Hughes tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth with a clutch base hit up the middle.
 
The Lady Chargers threatened in the top of the eighth, as Needham led off the inning with a double to right center, which followed a walk by Meagan Billingsley. Gonzales then forced three straight groundouts to end the inning.
 
Taylor Holland reached safely in the bottom of the eighth with a hit by pitch, which led off the inning. Holland was then gunned down at the plate, trying to score on Adcock's double to right center.
 
Adcock advanced to third and scored the game-winning run on Cline's blooper to shallow center.
 
Gonzales (4-4) was stellar in the win, allowing three runs, one earned on eight hits.
 
Christina Boczek (4-1) took the loss, working 3.1 innings of relief, while allowing two runs on four hits. Starter Whitney Gilbert allowed two runs on four hits.
 
Adcock finished three-for-four with an RBI, while Cline was two-for-four with a pair of RBIs.
 
DSU will return to action on Tuesday, March 20 for a 2 p.m. doubleheader versus former GSC member Southern Arkansas.
