Box Score 2 CLEVELAND – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team totaled 21 hits over two games, but it was not enough, as DSU split a Gulf South Conference doubleheader with the University of West Georgia, Saturday at University Field.
DSU (15-18, 3-9) took game one 8-2, before UWG (9-25, 3-11) tacked on six runs in the top of the fourth to take the second game 7-5.
The Lady Statesmen took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a two run home run by
Marisa Sanders.
With a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third, DSU pushed across three more, taking advantage of a pair of errors by the Wolves.
UWG also took advantage of errors, as DSU committed three miscues in the top of the fourth, helping the Wolves to cut the lead to 6-2.
Maggie Jackson drove in her second run of the game in the bottom of the fifth, and DSU also scored on a wild pitch to complete the scoring at 8-2.
The Wolves did not record a hit against DSU starting pitcher
Brittany Gonzales until the top of the third.
Gonzales (7-5) allowed two unearned runs on three hits in the win.
Lauren Kendall pitched two innings of relief, and allowed a pair of hits.
Antoinette Diaz (4-12) allowed eight runs, four earned, on eight hits in the loss.
Jackson (2-for-3) was the only DSU player with multiple hits.
Taylor Holland scored three runs for the green-and-white.
After the Lady Statesmen left the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the second in game two, the Wolves responded with an RBI single by Nicole Yancey .
DSU tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single up the middle by
Taylor Hughes.
The Wolves took a commanding 7-1 lead in the top of the fourth, which included a three run home run by Yancey. UWG also used a two RBI double by Imani Cabel. All three runs on the Yancey home run allowed by reliever
Lauren Kendall were unearned, and were charged to starter
Ashleigh Allgood.
The Lady Statesmen scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings to cut the lead to 7-5, but Diaz recorded the final four outs to pick up the save.
Allgood (7-10) allowed five runs, two earned on six hits. Kendall allowed two unearned runs in 3.1 innings of relief.
Shea McInerny (1-5) picked up the win, allowing two runs on five hits. Holly Barnlund allowed three runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings of relief, while Diaz allowed only one hit in 1.1 innings of work.
Cabel finished 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Yancey was 2-for-3 with four batted in.
Jordan Cole and Allgood drove in two for the Lady Statesmen.
Raina Stiffler finished 2-for-2 and reached base safely four times. Hughes and Jackson also had two hits.
The Lady Statesmen will return to action on Sunday, April 1 at University Field for a 1 p.m. doubleheader with No. 1 ranked Valdosta State.
