Lady Statesmen continue streak with sweep of West Georgia

CARROLTON, Ga. – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team won its fifth and sixth straight Gulf South Conference games on Saturday at University Field with a doubleheader sweep of the University of West Georgia.
 
Amber Adock drove in both runs in a 2-1 win in game one, and the Lady Statesmen came back from a 4-2 deficit in the top of the sixth inning to win 7-4 in eight innings.
 
DSU (25-28, 11-15) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth with a solo home run by Amber Adcock.
 
The Wolves (13-37, 5-21) responded quickly in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run by Kaley Sullivan.
 
Adcock struck again in the top of the seventh when her RBI single up the middle scored Kayla Wilson, in what proved to be the winning run of the contest.
 
Brittany Gonzales retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to give DSU the win. Gonzales (12-9) allowed only one run on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
 
Antoinette Diaz (7-17) allowed two runs on six hits in the loss.
 
Maggie Jackson finished 3-for-3 at the plate for the green-and-white. Adcock also added three hits in four trips for DSU. Sullivan finished with two hits for UWG.
 
The Wolves took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first in game two with a bases loaded bunt that scored Imani Cabel from third. Nicole Yancey scored when Taylor Holland's throw to first went into right field.
 
Ashleigh Allgood tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the second with her team leading fifth home run of the season.
 
UWG took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the third when Yancey deposited an Allgood pitch over the left field fence for her 12th home run of the season. The Wolves scored the second run in the inning off an Allgood wild pitch.
 
After not allowing a hit for 4.2 innings of relief, UWG pitcher Holly Barnlund allowed a two out double by Adcock, which was followed by a fielding error by Sullivan that scored Adcock. Katie Hebert then continued her solid hitting with an RBI single to right field that scored Holland.
 
DSU relief pitcher Lauren Kendall then retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to set up a bit eighth inning for DSU.
 
Adcock, Holland and Allgood each doubled to start the inning for DSU, which was followed by another RBI single by Hebert to give the Lady Statesmen the 7-4 lead.
 
Kendall allowed the first two hitters of the inning to reach, before retiring three straight to finish the game. Kendall (3-5) allowed four hits in five innings of relief.
 
Hebert and Allgood each had three hits for DSU, while Adcock added two. Sullivan finished 3-for-4 at the plate for the Wolves.
 
The Lady Statesmen will return to action on Sunday, April 22 for the final GSC regular season games of the season at No. 1 ranked Valdosta State. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. CST.
