Lady Statesmen shock No. 1 VSU in doubleheader split; Charles wins 100th

Brittany Gonzales pitched a complete game shutout in the upset of No.1 Valdosta State
VALDOSTA, Ga. – Brittany Gonzales threw a complete game shutout and held the No. 1 Valdosta State Blazers to only three hits as the Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team picked up a doubleheader split, Sunday at the VSU softball complex.
 
DSU (26-29,12-16) held on for a dramatic 1-0 win in game one, before allowing at least a run in all but one inning to fall 9-4 in game two. With the win in game one, coach Casey Charles won her 100th career game as head coach at Delta State.
 
The loss in game one ended a Gulf South Conference record 36 game win streak for the Blazers (43-3, 26-1) that dated back to February 18.
 
After an Alllana Hadley pitch hit Kendall Sizemore in the top of the third, she advanced to second on a ground out to the pitcher by Kayla Wilson. Then on a 2-2 pitch, Maggie Jackson sent Hadley's pitch down the left field line, scoring Sizemore for the lone run of the contest.
 
VSU had its best chance in the bottom of the sixth, putting runners on first and second with two outs. Gonzales then delivered one of her best pitches of the game, as she struck out Natalia Morozova looking to end the inning.
 
Gonzales (13-9) pitched her 13th complete game for the win, as she struck out three and walked two. Hadley (22-2) allowed one run on two hits in the loss.
 
Ashleigh Allgood had the second hit for DSU.
 
Game two presented a completely opposite contest for the 333 in attendance, as DSU jumped ahead 3-0 in the top of the first with an RBI double by Amber Adcock, who would later score on an error, and a solo home run by Allgood.
 
VSU answered with two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of three straight DSU errors.
 
The Blazers scored two more in the bottom of the second to take a 4-3 lead, using a pair of RBI doubles.
 
DSU scored its final run of the game in the top of the fourth when Taylor Hughes smacked a ball to deep left field that was dropped by Morgan Johnson as she crashed into the foul pole.
 
Clare Wamsley gave the Blazers the lead for good in the bottom of the third with an RBI single to score Morozova. VSU then added two insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings to pull away for the win.
 
Brianna Hancock (14-1) allowed four runs, one earned and only two DSU hits in six innings of work. Julia Fink pitched the top of the seventh for VSU.
 
Lauren Kendall (3-6) allowed seven runs, five earned on nine hits. Allgood allowed two runs on three hits in 2.2 innings of relief.
 
The Lady Statesmen will begin postseason play at the Gulf South Conference Tournament on Friday, April 27 in Southaven, Miss. Game time and opponents have yet to be released.
