Pitching helps DSU split on final day at UAH Charger Chillout

Lauren Kendall allowed one hit over five innings in the victory
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Miss. – Lauren Kendall allowed only one hit in five innings to help DSU pick up a 5-3 win over the University of Southern Indiana as the Lady Statesmen salvaged a split on the third and final day of the UAH Charger Chillout, Sunday at Wilson Morgan Park.
 
Palm Beach Atlantic (4-7) scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning to defeat DSU (4-2) in the first game of the day.
 
The Lady Statesmen left seven runners on base in the loss, including two in the sixth and seventh innings.
 
PBA scored its runs using five two out hits in the top of the fifth inning, using RBI singles by Kara Anderson and Brittany Jones.
 
DSU had runners on first and second in the bottom of the seventh, but Sailfish pitcher Amber Johnson struck out pinch hitter Caroline Womack to end the contest.
 
Brittany Gonzales (2-1) took her first loss of the season, allowing two runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts.
 
Johnson (4-3) allowed four hits with eight strikeouts and three walks.
 
Taylor Hughes (2-for-3) was the only player with multiple hits for the Green-and-White.
 
Southern Indiana (2-3) got on the board in the top of the first inning, as Janna Green scored on a wild pitch by Kendall.
 
The Lady Statesmen advanced runners to second and third with one out in the bottom half of the inning, but SIU starting pitcher Kelsey Jankowski forced an infield popup by Taylor Holland and a groundout by Amber Adcock to end the threat.
 
After Kendall retired the Eagles in order, DSU answered in a big way in the bottom of the second, capitalizing on two hit batters, two walks, two wild pitches and a two RBI double by Holland to score all five of its runs.
 
Following the explosive inning, the teams combined for only two more runs and three more hits. USI took advantage of a dropped fly ball by Adcock in the top of the third, as Toni Braun scored from third base on the miscue.
 
The Eagles scored the final run of the game via another wild pitch, this time by reliever Miller Maddox, who also recorded the final six outs of the game for her second save in as many days.
 
Kendall (2-1) struck out one and walked two, while Maddox allowed one hit in two innings, with three strikeouts and one walk.
 
Jankowski (0-1) allowed five runs on three hits with one strikeout and two walks. Sarah Owens allowed one hit in 4.1 innings of relief.
 
Megan Mayfield (2-for-4) was the only DSU player with multiple hits.
 
The Lady Statesmen return to action on Friday, Feb. 22 at the North Alabama Invitational. DSU will play six games in three days beginning with No. 15 Indianapolis at 1 p.m.
