Delta State University Softball at UNA INVITATIONAL (2.22.-24.13)
CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team enters play at the inaugural 2013 University of North
Alabama Invitational with a 4-2 mark following a successful weekend at the UAH Charger Chillout. The Green-and-
White open play on Friday with No. 7 Indianapolis (5-1), before closing out the day with South Region foe Miles
College.
The Greyhounds return eight starters from a team that went 50-9 last season, while advancing to its fifth
straight NCAA Tournament.
Miles finished last season 21-25, and return Preseason All-SIAC performer Tiffany Roberts at shortstop. The Bears
enter the weekend with an 0-4 mark, after falling in doubleheaders versus Gulf South Conference members North
Alabama and West Alabama.
Day two begins with DSU facing The University of Missouri-St. Louis (2-4). The Tritons opened the season at the
NFCA Lead Off Classic by facing five opponents that made an appearnce in the NFCA Preseason Top 25 poll. UMSL
picked up its biggest win of the tournament over No. 2 San Diego by a score of 11-1.
Day two closes with the Drury University Panthers (4-2), who return eight starters and three pitchers from a team
that finished 36-19 in 2012. The 36 wins were the most in school history for the five year old program.
DSU will begin the final day with another Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent Wisconsin-Parkside. The Rangers,
who are opening the 2013 in Florence, return the top three hitters to a lineup that finished 7-47 last season.
The Lady Statesmen finish the tournament with Georgia College and State University (8-4). The Bobcats finished
25-24 in 2012, which was the first winning season since 2009. GCSU is lead by former DSU assistant coach Jamie
Madewell-Grodecki.
LADY STATESMEN LOOK TO BUILD ON CHARGER CHILLOUT
Delta State finished the 2013 UAH Charger Chillout with a 4-2 mark outscoring opponents 29-15,
including three games with more tha five runs scored. The Green-and-White also picked up solid pitching
performances, as starting pitchers
Brittany Gonzales and
Lauren Kendall had ERAs under two, while relief
pitcher
Miller Maddox picked up two saves. On the offensive end,
Kaitlin Moore led the way at the plate,
as she hit safely in 5-of-6 games, including three multi-hit efforts. The Southaven, Miss., native finished
with two doubles in her first collegiate game.
Taylor Hughes and
Brook Cline also did well at the plate, as
each had two multi-hit games, including Cline's 3-for-3 performance in a 4-3 victory over Bellarmine.
LET'S GET SOME RUNS
In the 12-6 victory over the Ohio Dominican Panthers in the fourth game of the season, the
Lady Statesmen already surpased the 2012 total for most runs in a game. DSU scored in
double digits one time last season, which came in a 15-11 loss at Henderson State.
GONZALES NAMED PRESEASON ALL-GSC
Senior pitcher
Brittany Gonzales was named Preseason All-GSC in a vote by the league's
coaches. The Denham Springs, La., native is
coming off a stellar junior season in which she finished 16-11 with a 2.98 ERA. Gonzales is on
pace to finish in the top five in every Delta State career pitching record.
ADCOCK READY FOR SOLID SOPHOMORE SEASON
Sophomore shortstop
Amber Adcock is poised to build on a solid
freshman campaign in which she was named Second Team All-GSC and Second Team All-
South Region. The Brandon native finished the season as the team leader in runs (35), hits
(65) and doubles (17). Adcock finished second on the team with a .343 batting average, and
her 17 doubles were tied for second in the GSC and in the top five in DSU history for doubles
in a season.
LADY STATESMEN TABBED SIXTH IN GSC
One year after winning the national championship, Valdosta State comes in as the favorite
to earn the Gulf south Conference crown. The Blazers, who have won the last four GSC titles,
grabbed five of the eight first place votes and finished with 47 points. Alabama-Huntsville,
always one of the top contenders in the GSC, earned the remaining three first place votes
and finished second in the poll of league coaches with 42 points. West Alabama (36 points) -
which made a solid run in the NCAA South Region Tournament last season - came in third.
West Florida (32), which picked up a second place vote, was a close fourth. North Alabama
(22) came in fifth and was closely followed by Delta State (21), which finished second in
last season's GSC Tournament. West Georgia (16) and Christian Brothers (7) rounded out the
voting.
