Big inning helps Lady Statesmen split on final day of UNA Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FLORENCE, Ala. – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen used a big inning to defeat Wisconsin-Parkside and allowed a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh in a tough loss to Georgia College to close out the UNA Invitational, Sunday at Florence Sportsplex.
 
DSU (5-7) defeated Wisconsin-Parkside (2-4) 10-4, before falling 6-5 to Georgia College (11-9) to close out the competition.
 
The Green-and-White took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with Amber Adcock hitting the first DSU home run of the season. Following an infield single by Raina Stiffler, Brook Cline doubled to right-center field for the third run of the inning.
 
Starting pitcher Lauren Kendall retired the first 10 Rangers hitters, UWP then answered with back-to-back singles. With both runners on, Diana Gordon tied the game at 3-3 with a home run to right-center.
 
After being retired in order in the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Statesmen broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth with seven runs on six hits. DSU sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning, which was highlighted by a two run triple by Kaitlin Moore and a two run home run by Emily Todd. The home run was the first by Todd since April 28, 2011.
 
The Rangers added one run in the top of the seventh with an RBI groundout by Jessica Norton to complete the scoring.
 
Jessica Loy (2-for-3) was the only player with multiple hits for UWP. Kassidy Tally, Taylor Holland and Adcock each had two hits for DSU.
 
Kendall (3-3) went the distance and allowed four runs on six hits. Kristin Kleinmeyer (1-2) allowed seven runs on eight hits in four innings, while Katie Neubauer allowed three runs, one earned on three hits in two innings.
 
The Lady Statesmen started quickly in game two, as Adcock and Mariah Alvarez hit back-to-back home runs against GC starter Marisa Boyette. The home run for Alvarez was the first of her collegiate career and came on her second career hit.
 
DSU added to its lead with two runs in the top of the fourth, with an RBI double by Cline and a run scored on a wild pitch.
 
After retiring nine of the first 10 Bobcat hitters, starting pitcher Brittany Gonzales allowed her first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI base hit by Lacey Najafi.
 
The Bobcats got to within 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth, plating runs on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch.
 
Delta State scored its final run of the game in the top of the sixth, as Cline's hot shot to third caromed off of the third baseman and into the outfield, scoring Alvarez.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, Taylor Campbell got the Bobcats to within 5-4, as she drove in pinch-runner Natalie Lampert, who was running for Kristen Humphries, after reaching on an error.
 
Georgia College started off the bottom of the seventh inning with leadoff hitter Whitney Okvist reaching on an error. After stealing second base, the Bobcats tied the game on an RBI double by Abi LeRoy.
 
Following a lineout to second base, pitcher Dani Galluci drew a two out walk with the bases loaded. Kristen Brooks then sent Kendall's first pitch into left-center field, scoring LeRoy to end the game.
 
Kendall (3-4) took the loss in relief of Gonzales, who allowed three runs on four hits in five innings. Kendall allowed three unearned runs on five hits in 1.2 innings of work.
 
Galluci allowed three runs, two earned on six hits in six innings of relief. Boyette allowed two runs on two hits in one inning.
 
Adcock, Alvarez and Cline each had two hits for DSU.
 
The Lady Statesmen open Gulf South Conference play at University Field on Saturday, March 2 at 1:00 p.m. against the University of West Georgia.
