Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team pounded out 21 base hits to sweep the opening Gulf South Conference series over the University of West Georgia, Saturday at University Field.
The Lady Statesmen (7-7, 2-0) took game one 5-2 and
Taylor Hughes' walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth gave DSU the 5-4 victory in game two.
In game one, the Wolves (7-6, 0-2) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning with a two out RBI single by Danielle Combs.
DSU struck for three runs in the bottom of the third, as
Kaitlin Moore's bases loaded RBI double plated two, and
Emily Todd's sacrifice fly scored
Taylor Holland.
In its next at bat, the Lady Statesmen offense took a 5-1 lead with a wild pitch by UWG starting pitcher Megan Roberts and a sacrifice fly by
Megan Mayfield.
UWG scored the final run of the game in the top of the fifth, as Nicole Yancey singled to left, scoring Combs.
Brittany Gonzales retired the Wolves in order in the seventh to close out the game. With the final three outs, Gonzales pitched her 500
th career inning. It was also the 100
th career appearance for the senior. Gonzales (3-3) allowed two runs, one earned on six hits, with five strikeouts in the win.
Roberts (3-3) allowed five runs, three earned on six hits, with five strikeouts and four walks in 5.1 innings. Katie Shultes gave UWG 0.2 innings of scoreless relief to finish the game for the Wolves.
Yancey (3-for-3) was the only UWG player with multiple hits. Moore led the way at the plate for DSU, as she was 3-of-4 with two doubles and three RBIs.
Mariah Alvarez (2-of-3) was the only other DSU player with multiple hits.
Game two saw the Lady Statesmen plate single runs in the first and second innings, as
Amber Adcock had an RBI double to left-center, and
Brook Cline's RBI single scored Hughes in the bottom of the second.
UWG tied score at 2-2 in the top of the third on Yancey's two RBI single to right field.
DSU failed to score in the third or fourth innings, despite loading the bases in each frame.
The Wolves took a 4-2 lead in the top of the sixth, capitalizing on four hits in the inning.
The Lady Statesmen answered in the bottom of the inning, as
Amber Adcock's blooper into shallow right field scored Holland and a sacrifice fly by Hughes scored Moore.
DSU had the best opportunity to score in the seventh, as Cline had a leadoff single, and her pinch runner
Memrie Corley was left stranded at third base.
Gonzales, who was pitching in relief of Kendall, kept UWG off the scoreboard in the top of the eighth to set up the heroics for the offense.
Moore led off the inning with her sixth base hit of the day, and advanced to second on a fielding error by center fielder Megan Garcia.
After a pop out by Todd, Adcock advanced Moore to third with a single to left center. Hughes then gave the Lady Statesmen the victory with a single to shallow right field.
Gonzales (4-3) picked up the win in relief of
Lauren Kendall, allowing only one hit in two innings. Kendall allowed four runs, two earned on seven hits in six innings.
Shultes 4-3 allowed five runs, four earned on 15 hits, with five strikeouts and six walks. She also helped her cause at the plate going 3-for-3. Yancey (2-for-3) was the only other UWG player with multiple hits.
Adcock finished 4-of-5 to lead DSU, while Moore and Cline each went 3-of-4. Hughes finished 2-for-2, as she drove in the tying and winning runs.
The Lady Statesmen return to action on Sunday, March 3 for a doubleheader with defending NAIA National Champion Shorter University. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at University Field.
