Lady Statesmen drop extra inning marathon; bounce back in second game to split with UWG

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team dropped a 14 inning marathon 7-6, before bouncing back to defeat the University of West Georgia 11-1 in six innings, Saturday at University Softball Field.
 
Nicole Yancey's push bunt to third base drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 14th, giving UWG (12-21, 6-12) the victory in a game that lasted four hours and six minutes.
 
DSU (13-19, 7-11) then erupted for 13 hits in the second game to salvage the split with the Wolves 11-1.
 
In game one, the Lady Statesmen struck for three runs in the top of the first on an RBI double by Emily Todd and a two run home run by Mariah Alvarez.
 
RBI doubles by Amber Adock and Todd in the second and fourth innings gave DSU a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth.
 
UWG got its first runs of the game in the fourth on a three run homer by Laurel Clark.
 
The Wolves then tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth on a ground ball to the shortstop and a sacrifice fly.
 
The two teams remained scoreless for the next eight innings, stranding a combined 20 total runners, as UWG starting pitcher Katie Shultes and DSU relief pitcher Brittany Gonzales kept the opposing teams off the scoreboard.
 
DSU was the first to score in extra innings, as Alvarez reached on a hard ground ball to the shortstop.
 
West Georgia answered right back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single by Megan Garcia. Haley Richards nearly won the game for the Wolves with a two out double, but Garcia was thrown at the plate, as she attempted to score from first.
 
In the bottom of the next inning, Anna Lester's sacrifice bunt advanced Richards to third, setting up Yancey's heroics.
 
Shultes (8-11) pitched all 14 innings, allowing two runs, six earned, on 11 hits with three strikeouts and eight walks.
 
Gonzales (7-9) allowed two unearned runs on four hits in 8.1 innings of relief. Miller Maddox allowed five runs, two earned, on five hits in 4.1 innings. Lauren Kendall allowed two hits in one inning of relief.
 
Alvarez led the way at the plate, as she finished 4-of-6.
 
In game two, DSU jumped ahead 2-0 in the top of the first on Kaitlin Moore's first career home run.
 
The Lady Statesmen then added two more runs in the second and third innings. After scored a single run in the top of the fourth, UWG scored its lone run of the contest in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Garcia.
 
DSU then plated one more run in the top of the fifth, before scoring three in the top of the sixth on a sac fly by Todd and RBI doubles by Alvarez and Taylor Holland.
 
Kendall allowed one hit in the bottom of the sixth, before retiring the side to end the game by the eight run lead after five inning mercy rule.
 
Kendall (4-7) allowed one unearned run on five hits. Yancy (0-3) allowed 11 runs, nine earned on 13 hits.
 
Moore and Alvarez each finished 3-for-4 to lead DSU.
 
The Lady Statesmen hit the road on Tuesday April 2 to take on the Ouachita Baptist Lady Tigers. First pitch in the non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
