Box Score 2 FLORENCE, Ala. – The North Alabama Lions scored eight total unearned runs to sweep a doubleheader from the Delta State University Lady Statesmen, Thursday at UNA Softball complex.
UNA (16-6, 3-3) defeated DSU (7-11,2-4) 11-2 in five innings in game one, and came back from a 4-2 deficit to take game two 6-5 in 10 innings.
The Lions jumped on top of the Lady Statesmen 4-0 in the bottom of the first, using four unearned runs with two outs, stringing together back-to-back singles and a double.
Amber Adcock got one run back in the top of the second, as she led of the inning with a home run, but UNA answered with a single run in the second and two more in the third.
Trailing 7-1 in the top of the fourth, the Lady Statesmen got a sac fly from
Raina Stiffler to finish DSU's scoring.
UNA came back with four more in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four runs, capitalizing on two walks and three doubles.
Kayla Sneed pitched the final inning of relief, allowing one Lady Statesmen hit to finish the game via the eight run lead after five-inning mercy rule.
DSU had five hits in the contest, and no player had multiple hits. Dani Colwill was 3-for-3 with three RBIs for UNA.
Brittany Gonzales (4-5) allowed seven runs, two earned on nine hits in three innings, while
Katie Hebert allowed three earned runs without recording an out.
Memrie Corley allowed one run on three hits in one inning of relief.
Haley Barnette (7-4) allowed two runs, one earned on four hits in four innings, while Sneed allowed one hit in one inning.
Game two played out much differently as the two teams battled for 10 innings.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the fifth DSU took a 3-2 lead using a three run home run from Adcock, her second of the day. A double by
Emily Todd then set up a sacrifice fly by
Taylor Hughes to give DSU a 4-2 lead.
UNA battled back for one run in the sixth, and tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh with a one out sacrifice fly by Colwill.
Each team scored a single run in the eighth, as DSU used an RBI triple by Adcock, and the Lions kept the game alive with another sacrifice fly, this time by Summer Wilkerson. UNA had a chance to end the game in the inning, but could only manage the lone run, despite loading the bases with no outs.
DSU went in order in the 10
th, and UNA took advantage of the international-tiebreaker rule, as Colwill advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored one batter later on an RBI single by Nikki Hodges.
Miller Maddox (0-2) allowed six runs, three earned, on 10 hits with two strikeouts and six walks.
Breanna Riley allowed four runs, two earned on five hits in 4.1 innings, while Kayla Sneed (1-0) picked up the win, as she allowed one run on six hits with three strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
Adcock finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs, and
Kaitlin Moore was 3-for-5. Hodges was 3-of-5 to lead UNA.
The Lady Statesmen return to action on Saturday, March 9 to take on the Christian Brothers Lady Buccaneers. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
