CBU uses clutch hitting to sweep Lady Statesmen

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Christian Brothers University Lady Buccaneers scored a pair of runs with two outs in the bottom of the 10th and four runs in the bottom of the fifth of game number two in a doubleheader sweep of the Delta State University Lady Statesmen, Saturday at Bland Field.
 
CBU (11-19, 7-17) took game one 2-1 and took advantage of three DSU miscues in a 5-1 victory in the second contest.
 
The Lady Statesmen (15-25, 8-16) avoided a CBU threat in the bottom of the first, when Mariah Alvarez threw out Marie Joiner at the plate, from right field.
 
DSU starting pitcher Brittany Gonzales recorded seven outs with runners in scoring position in three of the next four innings to keep CBU off the scoreboard.
 
Kaitlin Moore gave the Lady Statesmen its best opportunity before extra innings, as she reached second base on an error to lead off the top of the seventh.
 
Following a sacrifice bunt by Emily Todd, that advanced Moore to third, CBU forced a double play on a bunt attempt to get out of the inning.
 
The Lady Statesmen scored first in the top of the 10th, as Taylor Holland's infield single scored Moore.
 
CBU was down to its final out in the bottom of the 10th, when Tiari-Jay Fernandez singled to left-center field, scoring Joiner.
 
With Jennifer Gonzalez on third base, Sammi Canizro hit a slow roller to second base, which plated the winning run for the Lady Bucs.
 
Gonzales (8-12) allowed two unearned runs on nine hits in the loss.
 
Michelle McEachron (5-5) allowed one unearned run on four hits in 10 innings of work., allowing only three hits in the first nine innings.
 
Amber Adcock had three of DSU's four hits.
 
Taylor Rosa-Ramon, Amy Gracia and Joiner each had two hits for CBU.
 
The Lady Bucs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by Emily Schmidt.
 
Moore tied the game in the top of the third on an RBI single to right field.

Lady Bucs starting pitcher Kim Adams allowed two hits in the sixth and one in the seventh, but did not allow a run to finish the game.
 
Lauren Kendall (4-8) allowed five runs, one earned, on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work. Miller Maddox (0.2) and Taylor Hughes (1.0) did not allow a run in relief.
 
Adams allowed one run on nine hits.
 
Hughes and Adcock each had two hits for DSU. Nikki Story and Schmidt led CBU with two hits apiece.
 
DSU returns to the field for its last home games of the season with Southern Arkansas University on Tuesday, April 16. The teams will play a single game on Tuesday, before playing a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 17.  First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
