Pitchers shine as DSU splits doubleheader with Union

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Miss. – Miller Maddox allowed one run in a complete game effort in the circle, as the Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team split a Gulf South Conference doubleheader with the Union University Lady Bulldogs, Sunday at University Field.
 
DSU (14-22, 8-14) scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to defeat Union (14-14, 9-13) 2-1 in game one, but did not advance a runner past second base in a 4-0 loss in game two.
 
Starting pitchers Miller Maddox and Brooke Thomas each kept the opposing team off the scoreboard until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Kaitlin Moore led off the inning with her second career home run.
 
Pinch runner Kayla Wilson scored what proved to be the winning run later in the inning on a passed ball by Lady Bulldog catcher Reagan Schrader.
 
Union scored its lone run of the game on a lead off home run in the top of the seventh by Amanda Chandler.
 
Maddox then forced three straight groundouts to end the game.
 
Thomas (5-7) allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits in the loss.
 
Maddox (3-4) allowed one run on six hits.
 
Moore had a pair of hits to lead DSU.
 
In game two, leadoff batter Alex Williams gave Union a 1-0 lead with a solo home run to left field. With one out, Chandler drove in the second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly.
 
Chandler added to her big day in the top of the third with a two run home run, giving Union a 4-0 lead off DSU starter Brittany Gonzales.
 
The Lady Statesmen did not record a hit until Memrie Corley had an infield single in the bottom of the third.
 
Lady Bulldog starting pitcher Kelly Robey retired 13 of the first 14 DSU batters until a leadoff single by Mariah Alvarez to lead off the bottom of the fifth.
 
Gonzales (7-11) allowed four runs on five hits in 2.2 innings. Lauren Kendall allowed only three hits in 4.1 innings of relief work.
 
Robey (8-6) allowed three hits, and struck out eight DSU batters.
 
DSU returns to action on Wednesday, April 10 for a home date with the Arkansas-Monticello Cotton Blossoms. First pitch in the non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
 
The Lady Statesmen split a doubleheader in Monticello on March 13.
