Lady Statesmen eliminated from GSC Tournament by UAH after victory over UWF in Sunday's opener

Box Score 1 SOUTHAVEN, Miss. – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team avoided elimination with an 8-1 victory over the University of West Florida and were seven innings away from a second straight appearance in the Gulf South Conference Championship game, but were dealt an 11-2 defeat by the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Sunday at Greenbrook Softball Complex.
 
DSU (20-36), who defeated a pair of regionally ranked opponents on Saturday, was held to only one hit until the top of the fifth by UWF (21-25) pitcher Taylor Bailey, but finally broke through with a pair of two out singles.
 
Following the base hits by Brooke Cline and Kassidy Tally, Amber Adcock continued her hot hitting in the tournament by sending the first pitch of her at bat over the left field fence to give DSU a 3-0 lead.
 
The Argos got their lone run of the contest in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Kasie Buckley, but left the bases loaded, as relief pitcher Brittany Gonzales struck out Hannah Dowling to end the inning.
 
Memrie Corley gave DSU a 4-1 lead in the top of the sixth with an RBI single that scored Mariah Alvarez.
 
The Lady Statesmen added plenty of insurance runs in the top of the seventh, plating four runs on five hits, including a two RBI single by Corley.
 
DSU pitchers Miller Maddox and Gonzales combined to force nine stranded UWF runners in the victory.
 
Taylor Holland, Tally, Adcock, Alvarez and Corley each had two hits for the Lady Statesmen. Adcock drove in four runs, while Corley had a career best three RBIs.
 
Caroline Kaston finished 4-of-4 to lead UWF.
 
Maddox (6-9) allowed one run on eight hits in 4.2 innings. Gonzales allowed two hits in 2.1 innings. Bailey (13-10) allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits in 6.1 innings. Jordan Ratliff allowed one run on two hits in 0.2 innings of relief.
 
In game two, UAH took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second and did not look back, as Mallory McNeal's RBI triple opened the scoring.
 
The Chargers exploded for six runs in the top of the third, which was highlighted by a three run home run by Courtney McNett, who was later named the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament for her efforts.
 
DSU scored its lone runs in the bottom of the inning on a two run home run by Cline, which was her first of the season.
 
UAH scored four more runs in the top of the fifth on a two RBI double by McNett, along with a run scoring single by Brianna Sullivan and a fielding error by Adcock.
 
The Lady Statesmen were retired in order in the bottom of the fifth, as the Chargers won by the eight run lead after five inning mercy rule.
 
No DSU player had multiple hits. McNett finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs. The 2012 NFCA Second Team All-America had 15 RBIs in five games versus the Green-and-White this season.
 
Gonzales (9-18) allowed seven earned runs on six hits in 2.1 innings in the loss. Lauren Kendall allowed four runs, three earned on six hits in 2.1 innings. Maddox recorded one out in relief work.
 
Whitney Toler (12-3) allowed two runs on four hits in 3.1 innings, as she earned the victory. Kimberly Jack pitched 1.2 innings of hitless relief.
 
Adcock and Alvarez were each named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts. Adcock finished the tournament 9-for-14 with six RBIs, while Alvarez was 8-of-13 with three RBIs.
 
DSU is scheduled to return seven starters from this team, including the top six hitters.
