HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Delta State University wrapped up tournament play at the finale of the Charger Chillout, winning one game against Maryville 5-2 and dropping a game to Georgia Regents 3-2, both in extra innings.
In game one, the Green-and-White faced the Saints of Maryville University. Delta State scored first when
Kassidy Tally led off with an infield single and stole second. A sacrifice bunt moved her to third and an error by Maryville resulted in Tally crossing home, taking the 1-0 lead in the top of the third. The score held until the bottom of the seventh when the Saints deadlocked the game at 1-1, forcing extra innings and the international tiebreaker. DSU turned on the offense in the top of the eighth when
Memrie Corley was placed at second base.
Taylor Holland doubled to left field to score Corely and
Kassidy Tally and go up 3-1 with no outs.
Andrea Cutts hit a sacrifice fly to score Holland, extending the DSU lead to 4-1. The Lady Statesmen plated another run by taking advantage of a Saints error to take the commanding 5-1 lead. Maryville tacked on a run in the bottom frame of the eighth inning but could not muster up enough offense to get within striking distance of Delta State. The Green-and-White went on to win 5-2 over Maryville.
Delta State took the slight advantage, outhitting the Saints 6-5.
Kassidy Tally and
Taylor Holland had two hits each, while
Amber Adcock and
Brook Cline contributed one hit apiece.
Taylor Tucker got her fourth win of the year in the circle, giving up two unearned runs on five hits in 8.0 innings of work. Tucker struck out four and walked five in her outing against the Saints.
Game two featured the Jaguars of Georgia Regents. The Lady Statesmen took the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from
Madison Zoeller to score
Andrea Cutts. Delta State added a run to its lead on a ground-rule double from Zoeller in the bottom frame of the sixth inning to lead 2-0 over Georgia Regents. The Jaguars put two runs on the board in the top of the seventh inning. DSU could not answer, forcing its second extra inning game of the day. Georgia Regents tacked on another run in the top of the eighth and held off the Green-and-White offense to take the win out from under Delta State. The Lady Statesmen fall to 4-5 on the season.
Amber Adock and
Madison Zoeller led game two with all five hits.
Macie Wilde suffered her fourth loss of the season in the circle.
The Lady Statesmen will open up conference play at home on Saturday, Feb. 15 against the University of West Alabama. The first pitch will be thrown at 2:00 p.m. followed by the second game at 4:00 p.m.
