MONTICELLO, Ark. – Delta State softball traveled to Blossoms Field for double-header action against the University of Arkansas at Monticello. DSU suffered the sweep, dropping game one 3-2 and game two 5-4 in eleven innings. The Lady Statesmen fall to 13-16 overall, while Arkansas-Monticello improves to 18-11.
DSU got the scoring started in the bottom of the second inning with two runs to take the 2-0 lead over the Cotton Blossoms.
Taylor Holland led off with a single to start the second inning, and from there, Delta State took advantage of Monticello errors by producing base runners.
Memrie Corley's fielder's choice and
Kassidy Tally's single to left field brought in
Andrea Cutts and Holland to put DSU up 2-0.
Monticello quickly responded with back-to-back hits and a two-out two-RBI single from Monticello's Hannah Pendley in the bottom frame to tie the game at 2-2.
The Cotton Blossoms took the lead when Beth Johnson went yard, taking the 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third inning.
Delta State made noise in the third, fourth and seventh innings but could not execute to plate any more runs, leaving seven runners stranded and leaving the score at 3-2 for the final.
Taylor Holland led the Lady Statesmen in game one, going 2-for-4.
Macie Wilde (4-7) suffered the loss as she pitched 3.0 innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits.
Miller Maddox came in for relief, pitching 3.0 shutout innings, giving up one hit and striking out three.
Game two was similar in that Delta State took the early lead in the top of the third inning. Three hits from
Brook Cline,
Memrie Corley, and
Mariah Alvarez scored one run. With
Kaitlin Moore at the plate and two runners on base, Moore smashed a three-run homer to put the Lady Statesmen up 4-0
Monticello was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when they rallied to plate three runs, cutting the deficit to 4-3.
A solo shot from Monticello's Kali Piha and a scoreless seventh inning by both squads notched the score at 4-4, forcing extra innings.
Neither team could plate a run for four extra innings until UAM's leadoff hitter in the bottom of the 11
th sent the Cotton Blossoms out with the victory in walk-off fashion on Brittany Eitel's solo homerun.
Kassidy Tally led the offense for DSU in game two, going 3-for-5 at the plate.
Mariah Alvarez and
Memrie Corley contributed two hits each to follow suit.
Taylor Tucker (6-5) suffered the loss after coming in for relief with the game tied. Tucker pitched 4.2 innings, giving up one earned run on three hits and striking out three. Senior
Miller Maddox got the no decision after pitching a majority of the game. Maddox threw 5.1 innings of work, giving up four earned runs on six hits and striking out four.
The Green-and-White played well in both games but could not finish strong to take either game.
Delta State returns home to University Field for a conference series with Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday, March 22 and Sunday, March 23. Saturday features a double-header starting at 2:00 p.m. between the Lady Chargers and Lady Statesmen, while a single game is scheduled for Sunday starting at 1:00 p.m.
