Come-From-Behind Win Results in Split for DSU Softball

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Lady Statesmen softball team hosted the No. 2 Lady Chargers of Alabama-Huntsville traveled to University Field for Gulf South Conference action on Saturday afternoon. DSU dropped game one 5-4 but got the come-from-behind win over UAH in game two, 8-7. The Green-and-White improves to 14-17 on the year and 7-9 in league play.

In game one, both teams were scoreless after one complete inning, but the Lady Chargers got things started in a big way in their second at bat, bringing five runs across the plate to take the commanding 5-0 lead.

Facing some adversity early in the game, Delta State fought back within one when Andrea Cutts smashed a three-run homerun over the left field fence. In the very next at-bat, junior Brook Cline connected and went deep for her second homerun of the year, cutting the deficit to 5-4 in the bottom of the second.

The second inning saw the only scoring by both teams, leaving the score for the final, 5-4, in game one.

Three Lady Statesmen led the offense with a multi-hit game. Amber Adcock went 2-for-4 at the plate, scoring once, while Andrea Cutts and Brook Cline both went 2-for-3 with homeruns, scoring all the runs for Delta State. Miller Maddox (3-5) suffered the loss, pitching 2.0 innings. Freshman Macie Wilde came in for relief work and went 5.0 fantastic shutout innings, giving up five hits and
striking out two.

Game two saw Huntsville taking the early lead again, this time in its first at-bat. UAH took advantage of a DSU fielding error to get the leadoff hitter on base. Back-to-back hits, a triple and a single, gave the Lady Chargers a 3-0 lead.

Delta State followed suit by answering with six runs in the bottom half of the first. Mariah Alvarez got the inning started with a one-out single. Two more singles from Kaitlin Moore and Amber Adcock loaded the bases. Madison Zoeller walked to bring in one run, and then Andrea Cutts reached on a UAH error to bring in two runs to take the lead 4-3. Taylor Holland scored on a fielder's choice by Memrie Corley, beating out the throw home with the Lady Charger defense playing in. A wild pitch brought in Brook Cline to notch the score at 6-3 after the first full inning of play.

The Lady Chargers added two runs to the scoreboard in the top of the fifth to make things interesting on a two-RBI single from Rae Edenfield to cut the Delta State lead to one, 6-5.

Delta State could not respond in the fifth or sixth, and then Huntsville tied the game at 7-7 in the top of the seventh inning.

With their backs against the wall, Delta State started the seventh inning taking advantage of a Huntsville error, putting the speedy Kassidy Tally on the base path. Tally stole second the first opportunity and slid in safely, recording her 33rd stolen base of the year. Mariah Alvarez tied the game with an RBI-single, scoring Tally from second. Kaitlin Moore reached on a fielder's choice and then advanced to second when the Lady Charger defense threw the ball into the DSU dugout trying to turn the double play. Ellen Tarrant pinch ran for Moore, representing the winning run. Amber Adcock advanced Tarrant to third with a single up the middle, the winning run 60 feet away. Madison Zoeller recorded the winning RBI when she scored Tarrant by reaching on a Lady Charger error, winning the game and earning the split.

Mariah Alvarez and Amber Adcock were the only Lady Statesmen to have multiple hits in game two, each going 2-for-4 at the plate.
Taylor Tucker earned the win to improve to 7-5 on the year, keeping her composure in a high-pressure game. Tucker gave up seven runs, six earned, on six hits, while striking out one.

The Green-and-White will look to take the series over Alabama-Huntsville on Sunday, March 23 at University Field. The first pitch will be thrown at 1:00 p.m.
