Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State softball faced off against Southern Arkansas on Sunday afternoon for the second time in one weekend. A 7-4 come-from-behind win for DSU in game two resulted in a series split with SAU as Delta State fell in game one 9-5. The Green-and-White improve to 21-21 on the season.
A former Gulf South Conference opponent, Southern Arkansas dropped the doubleheader against Delta State on Friday, looked for redemption on Sunday, and found it.
The first to cross the plate was the Lady Muleriders. A leadoff single and an RBI-single from Audrey Farfan put SAU on the board first.
Sophomore
Kaitlin Moore tied the game at 1-1 when she doubled to left center, bringing in
Kassidy Tally from second.
The long ball played a crucial role in the Southern Arkansas offense in the first matchup and played a similar role in the second. SAU's Maddie Dow put her team out in front on a solo shot in the third to put the Blue-and-Gold up 2-1. The hits kept on coming for SAU in the third as the Lady Muleriders scored seven runs on eight hits to take the 8-1 lead over DSU, which would ultimately decide the outcome of the game.
Errors plagued the Delta State defense in the fourth, causing another Southern Arkansas runner to cross the plate, 9-1.
Bases loaded with the top of the order due up set the stage in the bottom of the fourth for the Green-and-White. The two, three, and four hitters,
Mariah Alvarez, Moore, and
Amber Adcock, brought in four runs on three singles to notch the game at 9-5.
A scoreless fifth, sixth, and seventh innings from both squads kept the score at 9-5 in favor of Southern Arkansas, giving SAU the win.
Taylor Tucker suffered the loss in game one to fall to 10-9 on the season, pitching 2.1 innings and giving up seven earned runs on nine hits.
A solo shot got things started for the Lady Muleriders by Maddie Dow in the first. The very next inning Sarah Higginbotham sent a ball that landed on the other side of the left field fence, putting SAU up 2-0.
Delta State responded in the bottom frame with runners at the corners.
Brook Cline was caught stealing but executed the diversion play perfectly as
Madison Zoeller crossed the plate safely, cutting the deficit in half, 2-1.
SAU's Dow launched her third homerun of the day and her 14
th of the year, while Higginbotham found the other side of the left field fence for the second time in the game to put Southern Arkansas up 4-1, making all the runs scored by SAU off of homeruns.
The Green-and-White found some momentum in the fourth when back-to-back doubles from Adcock and Zoeller scored a run for DSU, cutting the lead to 4-2.
Late in the game in the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Statesmen made the comeback by scoring the tying and go-ahead runs to take the lead 6-4. A
Memrie Corley and
Mariah Alvarez fielder's choice scored
Ashley Mrozinski and
Megan Mayfield. Moore later came up to single up the middle to bring around two runs, Tally and Corley. Another fielder's choice from
Madison Zoeller brought in one more run on the scoreboard, Alvarez, to notch the score at 7-4 for the final.
Kaitlin Moore led the Lady Statesmen at the plate, hitting 6-of-8 and collecting four RBIs on the day. Brooke Cline went 6-of-7. Game one's designated hitter
Alexa LaCount hit 2-of-4. Catcher Madison Zoller had one hit in game two but drove in three RBI.
Sophomore
Kaitlin Moore earned the win with 4.0 fantastic innings of work, giving up just three hits and allowing no runs.
DSU returns to the field on Tuesday, April 15 as the Lady Statesmen face Arkansas-Monticello at home. The doubleheader starts at 1:00 p.m.
