DSU Softball Picks Up Split With UAM

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Lady Statesmen started a seven-game stretch in four days on Wednesday afternoon at University Field as Delta State took on Arkansas-Monticello in doubleheader action. DSU picked up the split, dropping game one 3-1 but taking game two 6-3, to move to 22-22 on the season.

The Cotton Blossoms went ahead of DSU early in the game when UAM's Sydney Tipton hit a solo shot to go up 1-0 in the second.

A single and stolen base by Kassidy Tally put her in scoring position for Mariah Alvarez. In two consecutive at-bats, the sophomore right fielder drove the pitch to the outfield for two straight stand-up doubles, scoring Tally on the second one to tie the game at 1-1.

The long ball continued to plague DSU as a two-run home run put Arkansas-Monticello back up 3-1.

The score stood as both squads were scoreless the last three innings of play, the Cotton Blossoms taking game one 3-1.

Saginaw, Texas native Mariah Alvarez led the offense in game one, driving in the only run for the Lady Statesmen and going 2-for-3 at the plate. Taylor Tucker (10-10) suffered the loss in game one, giving up three earned runs on eleven hits.

Arkansas-Monticello put one run on the board in the second to take the early 1-0 lead over Delta State.

Delta State tied it up and went ahead of the Cotton Blossoms in the bottom frame. When Taylor Holland reached base on a double to right center field. She later scored when Kara Lane Nowell reached on a UAM error. Andrea Cutts drove in another run to put the Green-and-White up 2-1 when she singled up the middle, scoring Brook Cline.

The Lady Statesmen tacked on four runs in the fourth to extend their lead to 6-1. Alvarez continued her hot streak as she connected with her third hit of the day, driving in Cutts. In the very next at-bat, Kaitlin

Moore singled through the whole at second to score Memrie Corley. The third consecutive hit came from junior Amber Adcock when she doubled to left field, bringing Moore and Alvarez across the plate.

The Cotton Blossoms answered with two runs in the fifth to cut the deficit to 6-3.

Neither team plated a run late in the game in the sixth and seventh innings, notching the final score at 6-3 in favor of Delta State.

Taylor Holland led the offensive attack for the Lady Statesmen as she went 3-for-3 at the plate, scoring once. Amber Adcock drove in two runs, while Alvarez, Moore, Kara Lane Nowell, and Cutts each drove in one. Kaitlin Moore (2-0) picked up her second win in a week as she pitched 5.0 innings and gave up three runs, one earned, on seven hits. Macie Wilde came in for relief and picked up her first save of the year, as she pitched 2.0 solid innings without giving up a hit or a run.

Delta State will head to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the first leg of their three-day road trip as they take on the Tigers of Stillman College in doubleheader action on Thursday, April 17 starting at 2:00 p.m.
