Box Score 2 ROME, Ga. – A tough outing on a cold, rainy day for the Lady Statesmen resulted in DSU dropping two games to the No. 1 team in the Gulf South Conference, Shorter University. Delta State fell in game one 9-1 in five innings and game two 7-0 to fall to 24-24 on the year and 11-14 in league play.
Shorter carried the momentum for the day beginning at the start of game one, scoring two runs in the first, fourth, and fifth innings and bringing in three runs in the second.
Delta State's lone run on the day came in the top of the fourth when
Amber Adcock hit a solo home run over the left field fence to put the game at 5-1 in favor of the Lady Hawks.
The next two innings saw Shorter scoring four runs to take game one courtesy of the mercy rule, 9-1 in five innings.
The Lady Statesmen were one-hit by the senior pitcher Christina Ezell, who struck out seven batters and only issued one walk.
Taylor Tucker (10-11) suffered the loss, as she got the start and gave up five runs, four earned, on five hits.
Miller Maddox came on in relief, pitching 3.1 innings and giving up four runs, two earned, on six hits.
Game two saw a similar occurrence, as the Lady Hawks took the early 4-0 lead in the first inning and tacked on three more runs in the third to extend their lead to 7-0 over Delta State.
A Delta State runner never made it past second base in game two with only three batters reaching base on hits for Delta State to suffer its third shutout of the year.
Miller Maddox (5-6) got the start and the loss in game two, pitching 2.0 innings and giving up five earned runs on seven hits.
Macie Wilde came on for relief pitching 4.0 innings and giving up two unearned runs on two hits.
The Green-and-White look to avoid the series sweep tomorrow when Delta State takes on Shorter in the series conclusion at 12:00 p.m. in Rome, Ga.
