Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Miss. – Senior Day commenced at University Field on Saturday as Delta State wrapped up the regular season with a doubleheader against West Florida. DSU secured the series win with the split against the Lady Argos.
Kassidy Tally started game one with her 60
th stolen base of the season, breaking the school and Gulf South Conference single season stolen base record, a record held since 2006 by former DSU outfielder Alyse Hasty. Tally was stranded at second as the next three batters were retired.
West Florida went ahead first in the third inning, recording two runs on three hits and one DSU error to take the lead 2-0.
Delta State responded quickly in its next at-bat by scoring one run on an RBI-single from
Kaitlin Moore to score
Andrea Cutts, cutting the deficit in half, 2-1.
A solo shot from UWF's Danielle Sanders extended the Lady Argo lead at the start of the fifth. One more run was tacked on for West Florida, taking the lead 4-1.
The next inning Delta State scored a single run when
Mariah Alvarez got things started by reaching second on an error by UWF. Moore moved her to third on a single and later scored on an RBI-single from
Amber Adcock, the lead notched at 4-2 with one inning left to play.
The Lady Argos were not done at the plate as Jenna Belser added another run courtesy of the second solo home run of the game for UWF to lead by three, 5-2.
DSU could not plate a run in the seventh and fell to the Lady Argos by a final 5-2.
Miller Maddox (6-8) suffered the loss, pitching 4.1 innings and giving up four runs, three earned, on six hits.
Game two decided which squad would take the series win and saw Delta State going ahead of West Florida in the third, 2-0. Senior
Megan Mayfield led off with a single through the hole at shortstop, stole second, and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Tally. Moore easily scored Mayfield on an RBI single to left center field and plated a run herself when she was brought in on a
Taylor Holland single.
It was not long before UWF responded with two runs on two hits to deadlock the game at two all in the very next inning.
Delta State ran away with the lead in the fifth courtesy of a two-out rally, started by Holland's single followed by a single by
Brook Cline.
Andrea Cutts reached on an error by the UWF second baseman that brought two runs across the plate. Tally drove in the final DSU run, singling through the hole at shortstop and taking the 5-2 lead.
The Blue-and-White made things interesting in the seventh when two runs crossed the plate, cutting the lead to 5-4 with a runner still at first.
Madison Zoeller gunned down the runner trying to steal second for the last out of the game, securing the win for the Lady Statesmen.
Taylor Tucker (11-11) earned the win in game two, pitching 3.1 innings in relief and giving up two earned runs on four hits.
The offense was held to just six hits in game one, but the bats came alive in game two as DSU outhit UWF 14-8.
Kaitlin Moore led the day, going 5-for-6, driving in two runs and crossing the plate once. Other big hitters in game two were
Kassidy Tally (2-for-3),
Taylor Holland (3-for-4), and
Madison Zoeller (2-for-3).
With the regular season over, DSU is gearing for the 2014 Gulf South Conference tournament in Cullma, Ala. Tournament play will begin on Thursday, May 1.
