THE LEADOFF
With the 2014 regular season in the books, the Delta State softball team is gearing up for the Gulf South Conference Tournament in Cullman, Ala.

DSU finished the season with a 27-27 record overall and a 13-16 conference record, which was enough to secure them the No. 5 seed in the tournament.

The Lady Statesmen found a series win over West Florida to close out the regular season, taking game one 13-8, dropping game two 5-2, and winning game three 5-4.

Kaitlin Moore had an outstanding weekend at the plate, as she went 8-for-10, including a perfect 3-for-3 outing in game one, crossing the plate twice and driving in six runs.

Sophomore Kassidy Tally finally caught up with the school and GSC single season record for stolen bases on Saturday in game one of the doubleheader with West Florida.

Tally picked up stolen base number 60 to break the record formerly held by DSU centerfielder Alyse Hasty, who held 59 stolen bases in a single season since 2006.

With the season over, a few Lady Statesmen rank high in the finally stats category for the conference.

Sophomore Southaven, Miss., native, Kaitlin Moore ranks sixth overall in batting average with a .401 average. She is also second in the league in doubles with 18.

Raleigh, Miss., native, Kassidy Tally has led the conference all season and ended the season at the top of the stolen base category with 61-of-63 stolen bases. She is tied for second in the GSC in runs scored with 55.

With 98 career stolen bases, Tally ranks third in DSU history in career stolen bases just as a sophomore.

With 18 doubles the last two seasons, Moore now has 36 doubles in her career, which is enough for her to rank third in school history in career doubles.

Delta State will open up GSC tournament play on Thursday, May 1 at 11:00 a.m. against the Lady Argos of West Florida, marking the fourth meeting in less than a week.
