Box Score 2 CULLMAN, Ala. – Making it to day two of the Gulf South Conference tournament, the Lady Statesmen first took on West Georgia in their first game of the day, defeating the Wolves 4-0.
The second game of the day featured a come-from-behind win over No. 20 Valdosta State, 6-4.
Facing elimination, Delta State came out firing in the first inning with West Georgia, as they tacked on three runs.
Kassidy Tally drew the leadoff walk, leading to
Mariah Alvarez and
Kaitlin Moore following suit and showing discipline at the plate and loading the bases. Tally came around to score on a throwing error by UWG's catcher, trying to get Tally stealing third.
Amber Adcock moved Alvarez and Moore into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. In very next at-bat,
Taylor Holland reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Alvarez.
Madison Zoeller drove in one more run, Moore, on an RBI single to right field for DSU to take the early 3-0 lead.
The score held until the seventh, as both teams were scoreless through five innings.
One Delta State run crossed the plate in the last inning on a sacrifice fly from
Brook Cline to score
Megan Mayfield and extending the DSU lead to 4-0.
The score stood for the final, as Delta State advanced in the tournament, taking on the No. 2 seed Valdosta State.
Five Lady Statesmen racked up seven hits against the Wolves. Adcock and
Madison Zoeller supplied two hits each, while Tally,
Brook Cline, and
Memrie Corley added one apiece.
Senior
Miller Maddox earned the win in the shutout, pitching the complete game and giving up four hits, while striking out six.
The Green-and-White saved their best for the last game of the day, against the No. 20 Valdosta State Lady Blazers.
Once again facing elimination, Delta State fell to the No. 2 seed early in the first inning 1-0. Another run was added in the third to put DSU behind 2-0 but not for long.
The bottom frame of the third started with Tally reaching base on a bunt and stealing second. Alvarez contributed a single up the middle, putting Tally 60 feet from scoring. The next at-bat saw Moore reaching on a fielder's choice, enough to score Tally, but Alvarez was out on the play. With one runner on and one out,
Amber Adcock connected and sent a shot soaring out of the yard in dead center field, giving the Lady Statesmen the lead, 3-2.
The lead held until the fifth inning, but then Valdosta's Kiley Rusen matched Adcock's two-run home run, putting the lead back in VSU's hands, 4-3.
A scoreless sixth from both teams and a scoreless seventh from the Lady Blazers left the score 4-3 in the last frame of the game with Delta State coming to the plate with its back against the wall, trailing by one run.
Tally set the tone for the inning when she led off with a single and a stolen base. Alvarez moved her to third on a single and stole to put runners in scoring position. Moore delivered by bringing in the tying run on a slow roller to the right side of the field, sacrificing herself but allowing Tally to score.
Now, the winning run 60 feet away at third with one out and the hard-hitting Adcock at the plate. Adcock sent the 1-0 pitch rocketing foul down the left field line. The very next pitch Adcock connected and launched a two-run walk off home run, a liner over the left-field fence, giving Delta State the 6-4 win.
Delta State outhit Valdosta 11-6 in the walk-off victory. Adcock led the way as the primary run producer, going 2-for-4 at the plate with two two-run home runs, collecting four RBIs. Alvarez went 3-for-4, while Holland and Tally contributed two hits each. Moore went 1-for-4 but was responsible for the other two runs. Adcock now has three home runs in the tournament and ten RBIs in the last four games.
Maddox (9-8) got the win in game two as she delivered another stellar pitching performance. Maddox earned her second win of the day, pitching the complete game and giving up four runs, three earned,
on just six hits.
With the win over VSU, DSU advances to championship Saturday at the Gulf South Conference tournament. The Lady Statesmen will face off with the Lady Chargers in a rematch at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 2 to see who will take on the Lady Blazers in the championship game
