LEADOFFThe Delta State University softball team (12-10, 3-5 GSC) travels to Huntsville, Ala. this weekend to take on No. 7 Alabama-Huntsville (18-5, 11-2 GSC) in Gulf South Conference action.
This matchup marks the fourth top-25 ranked team the Lady Statesmen have faced in 2015- North Georgia (9), Valdosta State (2), and Georgia College (15).
Last season Delta State and Huntsville met five times, the regular season three-game series and twice in postseason play. The Chargers edged DSU in the regular season series, taking two games out of three. Each game was decided by one run. At the GSC Tournament, Huntsville won both games 8-2 and 10-0 en route to its GSC runner-up finish.
DSU is coming off a series sweep against the Harding Bison on Tuesday, March 17 (GM1 4-1 | GM2 11-7). UAH is reeling off a sweep over Tuskegee (GM1 9-1 | GM2 8-0) earlier this week.
In conference standings, Huntsville ranks second behind top-ranked Valdosta, while Delta State holds the six spot.
The Green-and-White and the Chargers rank in the top four in batting in the league with Huntsville owning the two spot with a .327 average and Delta State ranking fourth with a .315 average.
Senior
Amber Adcock leads the Lady Statesman offense with a .467 batting average, third in the conference.
Huntsville's primary strength comes from the circle. The Chargers rank third in the GSC in pitching with a 1.74 overall ERA. That is in large part due to Kimberly Jack (8-1) posting a league-best .51 ERA.
Senior infielder
Taylor Holland owns the career walks record at DSU after tallying 76 freebies in her tenure. The Grenada, Miss. native achieved the honor on Monday, March 16 against Union and passes head coach
Casey Bourgoyne-Charles who formerly held the record for 13 years with 75.
Raleigh, Miss. native
Kassidy Tally holds the top spot in the Delta State and GSC record book for career stolen bases. The junior owns 136 swipes, passing former Lady Statesmen Alyse Hasty (2003-06). Tally is currently on a 14-game hit streak and has reached base in the last 16 games.
Kaitlin Moore and Adcock are tied for third in DSU's record book for most doubles in a career with 43. They are chasing Laura Simpson (1996-99) with 48.
After the road trip to Alabama, the Green-and-White will return home on March 28 and 29 as they host the University of West Georgia. The doubleheader for Saturday, March 28 is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. with game three wrapping up the series on Sunday, March 29 at 1:00 p.m.
