CLEVELAND, Miss. – Jake Brumfield (2-0) struck out a career-high eight batters and worked 5.0 scoreless innings to lead Delta State University (18-14) to a 3-1 victory over Mississippi Valley State University (6-25-1) on Wednesday, April 15 at Ferriss Field. The Statesmen scored three runs on eight hits in the win, while the Delta Devils plated a run on six hits. DSU improved to 2-0 on the year and 81-15 all-time against MVSU.

@DSUBaseball HOW IT HAPPENED- Delta State scored first in the bottom of the second inning, as Juan Rivera delivered an RBI single down the right field line, scoring Landon Thibodeaux from second.
- Ethan Gill made it a 2-0 Delta State lead in the third with a towering solo home run over the left-center field wall. It was the team-leading seventh home run of the year for the Pontotoc, Miss., native.
- After an error put Ben Pickard on at first in the fifth, Thibodeaux slapped an RBI single up the middle to extend Delta State's lead to 3-0.
- MVSU finally scratched the scoreboard in the top of the fifth, as the Delta Devils plated Quentin McBride on Drew Wheeler's sacrifice fly to right field. DSU reliever Justin Vincent surrendered the run after back-to-back walks allowed McBride and Kalik May to reach base.
- Jake Brumfield (2-0) worked 5.0 scoreless innings for the Statesmen in the win. The former Pearl River CC transfer allowed two hits and struck out a career-high eight in the start.
- Tyler Case (3-6) took the loss for the Delta Devils after working 7.0 innings. The senior from Brookhaven, Miss., allowed three runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
- Senior reliever Nick Goza (6) earned his sixth save of the season after coming on in relief of Trevor Blocker in the top of the ninth. With runners on first and third and two outs, the Broken Arrow, Okla., native retired Xavier Franklin on a groundout to third.
- Three Statesmen finished the night with two hits, including Thibodeaux (2-3), Gill (2-4) and Marc McMillian (2-3).
STAT OF THE GAME- 10 – The Statesmen pitching staff combined to strikeout 10 Delta Devils in the 3-1 victory.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE- Jake Brumfield, a junior from Natchez, Miss., made his second start of the season at Ferriss Field versus Mississippi Valley State, working 5.0 innings and striking out a career-high eight Delta Devils. The 6-foot-3 right-hander worked 3.2 innings, taking a no decision, in an 8-7 victory over Arkansas-Monticello on March 31.
- Ethan Gill connected on his seventh home run of the year on Wednesday off MVSU's Tyler Case. Gill's seven home runs are the most by a Statesman hitter since Cameron Robulack hit eight in 2011. The home run was the 33rd of the year for the Statesmen in just 32 games, the highest season total for DSU since the 2010 squad connected on 35 in 51 games.
- 31 – The Statesmen scored a season-high 31 runs in the first meeting with Mississippi Valley State on April 1 at Delta Devils Field. DSU's previous high was 14 versus Arkansas-Monticello on Feb. 11, 2015 in a 14-8 victory over the Boll Weevils. The 31 runs are also the most scored by the Statesmen since defeating the University of Montevallo 24-3 on Feb. 10, 2012 at Kermit Johnson Field.
UP NEXT- The Statesmen host the Shorter Hawks this weekend at Ferriss Field.
