Cummins drives in six to lead DSU past HSU 17-2

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Junior centerfielder Brandon Cummins was 3-for-5 with a career-high six RBIs to lead the Delta State University baseball team to a 17-2 victory over Henderson State University on Tuesday, April 21 in the final home game at Ferriss Field. The Statesmen improved to 22-14 on the year while the Reddies slipped to 22-16. DSU finished the home schedule 11-2 and will wrap up the regular season this weekend at the University of West Florida.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Will Powell's two-out, RBI single to left put the Reddies up 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning.
  • Delta State loaded the bases to start the bottom of the fourth after Colton Welch singled to right, Marc McMillian walked and Hunter Twitty legged out an infield hit. Juan Rivera followed with a sac-fly RBI to left-center to tie the game at 1-1. One out later, Brandon Cummins connected on a three-run home run to right-center to put the Statesmen up 4-1.
  • The Statesmen took a commanding 10-1 lead with a six-run fifth inning. Ethan Gill's two-run home run to left, jumpstarted the frame. McMillian scored the third run of the inning on a wild pitch by HSU reliever Jay Hawley. Rivera drove in his second run of the game with a sac-fly to center, while Cummins and Landon Thibodeaux plated the last two runs of the set with RBI at-bats.
  • Delta State kept the runs coming in the bottom of the sixth, scoring seven times to put the game out of reach with a 17-1 lead. After loading the bases, Jonathan Andrews brought in McMillian after being hit by a pitch. Cummins followed with a two-RBI double into the left-center gap. After a sac-fly RBI by Thibodeaux plated Andrews, Pickard drilled a fastball up the middle to score Cummins from third. Gill was hit by a fastball and Welch walked to load the bases for the second time in the inning. McMillian's sac-fly RBI scored Pickard and Twitty closed the scoring with an RBI single to right.
  • Henderson State kept scratching and scored its second run of the game in the top of the ninth off reliever Westin Stringer, as Powell scored from third on a throwing error by Dalton Skelton.   
  • Jake Brumfield (3-0) earned the win for the Statesmen. The Natchez, Miss., native made his fourth start for DSU, working 5.0 innings while giving up one run on four hits. He walked one and struck out two as well.
  • DSU's Justin Vincent (2.0), Trevor Blocker (1.0) and Westin Stringer (1.0) pitched in relief.
  • The Reddies used five pitchers on the day, as Jay Hawley (0.2), Hayden Daniel (0.1), Josh Henderson (2.0), and Nick Vanthillo (1.0) worked in relief of starter Luke Tebbetts. Tebbetts (2-5) was saddled with the loss after giving up six runs on four hits in 4.0 innings.
  • Delta State finished the game with 17 runs on 13 hits while committing three errors.
  • Henderson State scored its two runs on five hits with an error.      

STAT OF THE GAME
  • 6 – Junior centerfielder Brandon Cummins set a new career-high for RBIs in a game with six. The Drew, Miss., native was 3-for-5 on the day with a three-run home run (3), two-RBI double and an RBI single.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • Delta State closed the home portion of the 2015 schedule, finishing 11-2 at Ferriss Field. The Statesmen are 935-269-5 all-time in 44 seasons at Ferriss Field.
  • Twitty tied his career-high with a three hit performance. In his last game at Ferriss Field, Twitty went 3-for-3 with a pair of walks, two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Cummins hit his third home run and collected his team-leading 21st multiple hit game of the year.
  • Delta State slapped two home runs Tuesday to give the Statesmen 38 home runs on the season.
  • Rivera finished with two RBIs to bring his season total to 11.
  • Gill provided his 11th multiple RBI game of the season with two.

  • The Statesmen closeout the regular season with a three-game series at the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Florida.
